Synthetic Oil

I know this has been brought up in several threads but just throwing it out there. I made the switch to synthetic a couple weeks ago. V8 180k miles. Truck ran great before but now I feel it runs even smoother. Still no leaks after switching over. Not running high mileage. All the threads I have read seemed to have mixed thoughts but I'm glad I switched. Not placebo effect either lol.

I never really noticed more than a slight difference myself but I know synthetic is better, and only a little more expensive than a quality conventional, so I run it in both vehicles.

Now the real debate is that when I fill up with 93 octane gas instead of 87, I swear my 4Runner runs better and has more power

And my 3rd gen seems to get better milage as well :)

Years ago I had a Saab 95 Areo that required premium fuel. I noticed that the car both drove better, acceleration and actually got better gas mileage with the premium fuel, so I just kept using it. I understand these are two different vehicles and engines, etc., but just my two cents. Cheers.

There is less Ethanol in the Premium. I notice about 2-3 mpg vs Regular.

Really? Proof please. (I mean that with all due respect, I am genuinely curious about this as it's not the first time I've heard this).

I'd love to see the proof on that one too. I ran shell premium once in my old Jeep to "clean" it... didn't notice a difference.

I would like to see any studies on the levels of ethanol in the different grades.

Got it from my new chainsaw manual and the shop. Manual said due to increase in ethanol in regular gas to use 89 as a minimum or there would be mechanical problems. No, not a study, but comes from a company that I am sure would rather not pay for warranty work. Not trying to be smart. I too would like to see the % of ethanol in each grade. I figure my MPG mathematically and track every expense. (Use a great app Road Trip) Saw pretty close the same increase in our 2011 Kia Sorento when we switched to premium. Due to the increased cost of the premium gas I am paying the same money per mile. The higher the ethanol the worse your fuel economy. Compare the EPA numbers on the E85 vehicles when they use E85 or regular Gas. Big difference.

2015 Chevrolet Silverado C15 2WD
Regular Gas= 20 mpg combined
E85 Gas =14 mpg combined

Compare Side-by-Side

There are no longer any fuel stations in my area that sell 100% gasoline any more. I would like to see what my mpg would be with that.

i tested it myself with my own vehicle. one month with 91 (highest octane in CA) and then the following month with 87 (lowest) and my MPG was the same, only thing that was different was the instant power and pedal feel and my wallet was emptier.

I also have a charted tanks of fuel as well as my brother in law due to different vehicles to see the change. And for filling up with premium it costs an extra 5-8 dollars. . .and on average we got a range anywhere form 30-50 extra miles in a tank. This was over the course of a year. SO as you can see premium really does make a difference.

My only confusion is what does premium have to do with the synthetic oil as the OP?

I use synthetic for the sake of longevity and it dont have to change as often, but thats just my .02 cents. . .what would i know?

you switched TO synthetic? I was under the impression they already ran synthetic oil.

Sorry. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. I also use Full Synthetic in all my vehicles. Never had any increased leak problems. I do feel like getting sythetic off my hands is more difficult than the dino. Also, like the increased change interval.

this is due to the fact that E85 has 25% less energy content than E10. my senior project paper was on this exact subject.

Did you study 87 89 91 and 93? I am more interested in the levels of ethanol in the grades. Does 93 have less ethanol content than 87 etc...?

As far as synthetic oil goes. I switched my 06 with 160k to full synthetic with no issues. Runs great.

Since in many areas of the country (like NH and MA) and Oxygenate (Ethanol) is MANDATED by the Feds. So I know for a FACT that in states that have mandated oxygenates additives - ALL grades will have a minimum of 10% Ethanol. MTBE use to be the oxygenate of choice...but that stuff is EXTREMELY nasty for the environment.

I know you are right about the the 10%. Once the Tier 3 is in effect all will have the 10% everywhere. Will hate resulting fuel economy and using more resources to go the same distance. But above my pay grade i guess.

I'm still trying to figure out how the country is going to pay for an increase in mandated ethanol since it is already subsidized. It costs much more to produce than gas. those of you getting better gas mileage on premium vs regular gas must not have ethanol in the premium or else you are snorting fairy dust because you will not get better gas mileage. . . . . thats not how octane works. I wish I could run ethanol free premium, but its illegal here in MN except for small engines and collector cars. Not sure the mileage improvement could make up for the cost increase though.

E costs more even before you figure in the transportation costs. Can't put E in pipelines so it comes to the tank truck terminal by rail or truck. Bad for pipelines but ok for your car ? Yep, picks up protective crap off the wall of the pipe and destroys pipeline valve seals.

It's for the reasons living in the midwest surrounded by cornfields, and actually 2 miles away from an ethanol plant, and I run Premium with NO E. And I do in all my cars and the mrs' car as well. That E is not worth saving pennies when it makes your truck run like crap.
