t-case locked in 4H

We are running a dual case setup with a 470 gear in the back case. The shifter in the back case gets stuck in 4H. The shifter looks like it would be in 4 high but in fact it acts like 2 high. Every time this happens we have to pull the shifter, move the selecting forks forward and reinstall it, then it works again for a little bit. It sounds crazy, but we did try turning the shifter around so that it faces away from me. This resolved the problem for only a short window. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have been fighting this problem for weeks. Oh also, we have had the case opened everything looks great. The shift forks have been measured and do not need to be trimmed.

I just did my dual cases and 4.70 gear install about 4 months ago. I'm thinking about this, will get back to you.

But 1st, what brand is everything? TG? Marlin?

You are not using twin sticks are you?

Has it always gotten stuck since the install, or did it work properly at one time?

What year and model did the extra transfer case come from?

This may be funny but this was happening to me, I bought Marlin heavy duty springs and new detent balls for all my case's and it started to work normal again. Good luck.

Along the lines with the above poster, can you feel all of the gear selection points?

As in, does it 'click' into each gear, 2hi -- N -- 4 hi -- 4lo. (CAN YOU FEEL IT CLICK INTO N?)

You should be able to feel the detent ball pressing into the notches on the shift rod.
If not, the shift rod may be installed upside down (rotated by 180*)

Also, are the pins installed to hold the shift fork on?

Lastly, (And what i think is your issue) is you forgot to install the interlock pin that hooks the two shift rods together.

None of these seem like his issue, sense he can take the shifter out and move the shift rail back into the gear then it isn't any of the interlocking pin's.

Also if the shift rail was installed upside down, would it go into any gear's? I think not.

I think it's the same cause it was for me, warn out shift spring's and detent ball's.

Heres the pins i was talking about

Yes i understand that, but if those pin's aren't in he wouldn't be able to shift the transfer case at all. Well he would be able to, BUT it wouldn't change gear's. Trust me i tore mine apart a million time's to try and figure out what it was, it was just my shift spring's and detent ball's. Been working good ever sense.

Yes, it would go into all gears if the rod is upside down. But, it would pop out of gear. the detents are there to hold it in gear.

I am still thinking it is the interlock pin. The way to know is when you take off the shifter, and slide one rod back into gear, does the other rod move too? (IT SHOULD!!)

He doesn't have an issue with it popping out of gear, it's getting it out of gear he is having issue's with.

Ok forget about the pins I posted pictures of and focus on the interlock pin. That would cause him to not be able to get it out of gear because the second shift rod is not moving along with the first. It makes sense since he is saying he has to remove lever to manually shift one of the rods. This means the two rods are acting separately because of a missing interlock pin

The detents will not stop him from shifting OUT of gear. Their only function is to hold it IN gear, and prevent it from popping out of gear when torque is applied.

Call marlin, they always answer and were able to answer any question I asked them.

Actually this confirms my last post.

When he shifts, only one of the shift rods is moving. Same operation as if he had twin sticks.

So either buy a twin stick kit, or get the shift rods both lined up and slide in the interlock pin.

Step 72 on marlins install directions. (4.70:1 Gear Install | Marlin Crawler, Inc.)
