Was talking to a Co-worker about how I was annoyed that Toyota has a TSB for the FJ Cruiser and new 4Runners for Driveline Clunk, but not the 4th gens. He mentioned to me that a week or so ago he saw a TSB for the '03-'09 4Runner that addressed this issue. Sure enough, TIS now has a TSB citing that if verified, the repair procedure is a new driveshaft.

Unfortunetly, it seems to apply only to V8 4WD models at the moment.

Yeah, but if you have an extended warranty it should cover it, otherwise it seems you'll have to pony up for the driveshaft yourself. Which sucks for those who are out of warranty and/or do not have extended warranty. But at least they have an updated part number to go with, I think that Toyota should extend the warranty on that since they JUST posted it in August 2012, I have a feeling if enough people will complain and Toyota will extend the warranty to cover the vehicles.

Eh, I haven't seen a Sunroof frame rusted out in our area yet, but I have a feeling its not isolated to the 4Runner or Toyota. I have never liked Sunroofs, they always seem to have too many problems and are expensive and labor intensive to repair for a hole in your roof.

As for the cylinder head gaskets on the V6's we've gotten only a few 4.0Ls with that issue and I think Toyota is taking those on a case by case basis, though the dealer might try and wiggle out of it.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY
• This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty . This warranty is in effect for 60months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date."

So 2003s are left out. Either a mistake by Toyota or a disingenuous attempt to patronize.......

I don't know if they are required to or not, but at our dealership we haven't had too many issues with having our extended warranty on both Toyota and non-toyota vehicles cover applicable TSBs. Even if the vehicle has more than 60k/6yrs, they've been pretty okay with covering TSBs. But that's just my experience at our dealer so I can't say if it applies with everyone.

~Just talked to the same co-worker, he used to work at a Lexus dealer. Was mentioning the warranty coverage and he said usually if you can show in the repair history that it was mentioned/noted on a repair order PRIOR to the 60k/6yr period Toyota will honor it even if the vehicle is currently out of warranty since they posted the TSB 9yrs later.

Did you ever take it to the dealer BEFORE the 6yr/60k? If they have it recorded prior to it going out of warranty you may be able to get it covered.

My Co-Worker was mentioning how they do that sometimes, worth a try? :shrug:

Nope. I just bought it 3 months ago with 77k miles on it. Luckily the cats on the manifolds went out before it hit 80k miles.

Can't win 'em all I guess....


(and my service manager will not goodwill it either. lol. i tried.)

Am wondering the same thing i have an 06 with abt 52k. Havent really noticed a clunk on my v8, maybe i just got used to it?!

A quick check of the internets shows a price of around $270 for the part. Anyone know how difficult it is to change it out? I don't recall seeing any write-ups on the board.

Not according to the TSB posted at the top. I'm glad there's some recognition by Toyota but this TSB doesn't make sense to me. The V6 and V8 share the same drive shaft as far as I'm aware. If it clunks on the V8 4wd's then it clunks on the V6 4wd's.

Yep my 08 v6 4wd has it. Not everytime you stop, but if you stop hard enough its there.

Great info, thanks for posting this. I was beginning to think that Toyota wasn't going to address this at all on the 4Runners. I was going to pony up the money next month to have the Lexus TSB performed (same fix) on my 4Runner, just so I wouldn't have to constantly climb underneath my 4R every time the clunk surfaced.

I'm over my drivetrain warranty period, but I just logged into my account at Toyota.com/owners and sure enough, my very first warranty visit was at 1,100 miles just a month after I bought my 4Runner brand new back in '07....

I took my 62,000+ mile 4R in today with a work order from a previous repair that noted I had mentioned the clunk in earlier repairs. They agreed to cover it because of that but they need to hear the clunk themselves. So, they are taking it tomorrow for the day, hopefully the 4R exhibits the clunk.
