T-SB-0121-12 Its Finally Here!

Took my '05 V8 Sport in with 100k and they had the service tech check it out. They got my extended warranty to cover it. Parts were ordered on Monday and supposed to be here by Friday.

It seems a little lame that Toyota would issue this TSB and include vehicles that clearly don't qualify for the repair. I don't know what the issue date of the TSB is but my 2008 with less than 30K mi (but put into service in 2007) is already not eligible.

So is the strategy to wait until most of the vehicle affected are excluded and then issue a TSB ... ?

I'm hoping that since the issue was raised by the previous owner and recorded in Toyota's maintenance records, I will have a chance at this repair as my "clunk" is getting worse.

Edit: anyone know what is different about the new drive shaft that helps eliminate the "clunk?"

Awesome that there's a TSB for this annoying issue.

Terrible that it doesn't cover both of my 4Runners. Dammit, Toyota.

I really don't see how this helps most of us...thanks Toyota... remember that time about 5 years ago you replaced a $400 part on my 89' toy (some kind of steering part).... free of charge due to TSB no matter how old it was.

It was your error you made it correct.... not so much this time around. :wtf:

It's sad when a TSB is issued and most won't be able to use it. Like most big companies everything they do is calculated.

Now that I replaced both front calipers as they were locked and replaced both head gaskets TSB's will probably come out on those as well.

While I'll admit my 4R has performed quite admirably for allot of miles the head gasket problem really pissed me off.

I just took my 4runner in to see if Toyota will honor the tsb. I had called Toyota customer service on this issue at 35k and mentioned to the dealer many times. I am waiting to hear back from them tomorrow so I hope it's good news!

I took mine in to try to get the work done under warranty and no dice. They said I was out of the warranty period by a couple months. FML. The new part is ~$370 according to the parts counter at my dealership. I did have them check it before but they called it a normal condition then so nothing was done. Toyota really tried to save some cash on this one by putting this out with such a limited group and with only 2 years that can really still be under warranty.

Has anyone compared the new part to the old one to see whats different?

Just called my dealer and it's no dice on my 2004.

Called Toyota corporate to express my displeasure. 800-331-4331. Especially since my truck was certified to 100K for drivetrain and it's no dice as I am at 115K now.

But they did say they would note my concern.

Any of you with your own concerns might want to call the same number. Not that you'll get the answer you want to hear, but if enough people call, who knows?

I called on the calipers, exhaust smell, head gaskets and now the driveshaft.

Sure, I drive mine, but each time I call I've been told "we'll make a note of this".

V6 4R Fixed

Well, thanks to this forum and posting I got my 2008 V6 4R a new rear driveshaft installed today. Truck has 63,000 miles but I did have an RO when I had some service done at 52K where I mentioned the clunk to them and it was documented.

They even gave me a loaner Prius (sorry, not for me though) for the day.

Thanks!

Bob

I just heard back from Toyota corporate out of Long beach Ca office. They said since I am out of warranty there is nothing they can do unless there is a recall. I was told however If enough people call and complain then the issue will be escalated for a possible recall. But the key is to have multiple people call and document their concerns. Since I don't have my issue documented in the service notes I was denied any assistance.

Any update? Did they change the splines? Is it just a driveshaft part or did they also do something with the female part on the transfer output?

Am not hopeful..... If they don't do a recall on the caliper freeze issue I doubt they will do much more for this....

For the record, I just had this done and the clunk is gone. Stealership tried to pass it off as normal at first, until I brought this TSB to their attention. Job is quick, but part is expensive - about $400 to get it done. Luckily had the CPO warranty and only had to pay $50.

Yeah, according to the factory guy I spoke with a year or two back about this; he had gone to Japan and they told him "its an expected and accepted byproduct of owning a 4WD SUV." So I guess Toyota didn't see it as a problem because where they live its not a big deal?

The TSB was made (first for the GX470) to address other customers who did not feel it was an acceptable issue with a 4WD vehicle and Toyota addresses it on a "case by case" basis. This is why it is a TSB and not a Recall or Campaign, its only an issue if the customer brings the complaint up.
