T1815 Install

Thanks Falcon115 for the step by step and the USB mod. Also thanks to others on the board for the Aux input (resistor hack) mod. I actually picked up a brand 'new' 2011 T1815 off of eBay. It was taken out at the dealer for the Alpine GPS unit, so really no mileage on it. Got a great deal - $100 which included the shipping. The entire tearout, mod, dash 'dremeling', install and cleanup took about 4 hours. The 'dremeling' probably took the longest since a sloppy job will definitely show. I did it over 3 days since that is what my schedule allowed. The only parts that I needed to buy were the 2.2K Ohm resistor ($1.29) and the flush mount 3.5mm jack ($3.29), both from the Shack. All the cables were from spare parts and old computer parts.

A couple of changes from the mods described on the forum...
1. didn't have to cut the internal mount as I wanted the unit to stick out a bit from the panel as it was meant to. Screw the unit as far as it will go with the internal mounts intact and it will stick out the 1/8" that a stock unit would.
2. for the aux harness. Get an old PC that someone is throwing out. Grab the internal cables that have pin connectors and use them to connect to the aux jack. No need to solder or find individual pin connectors and it makes it real neat.

I placed the USB port and 3.5mm jack in the cubby beneath the head unit...

TREY99EK......please post or start a new thread. That might be better because then others can find it easily. I would definitely want the details as I was looking to install one in my FJ. If only they would come down in price....they seem to be asking $400 these days.

I posted in the thread 2010 Alpine premium unit. Here is what I found basically.

Update for the Alpine premium. I finally got the ipod/usb to work thanks to the t1814 tread. I finally got the balls to tear this down. The board is marked different from the board on the t1814 so you can't just assume you solder the wires in the same color sequence. The t1814 is label to USB wire color.

USBG - Black
USBM - White
USBDP - Green
USB5 - Red

The alpine unit is labeled to USB wire color.
VBUS - Red
HM - White
HP - Green
GND - Black

Althrough you have the ports int he same direction according to the pictures, they are different. I just assumed GND was black and then followed the similar ending letter USBM to HM and USBDP to HP.

WORKS!!!!

USB Connections

I didn't think much about it but now that you put the markings next to each other it's somewhat obvious....

USBG - Black
USBM - White
USBDP - Green
USB5 - Red

VBUS - Red
HM - White
HP - Green
GND - Black

Red = power, voltage bus (VBUS), 5 volts (USB5)
White = this is one of the data pairs, also known as the Negative (M = Minus) Differential or D-
Green = this is the other part of the data pair, also known as the Positive (P) Differential or D+
Black = ground (G)

Awesome, so no more need to guess or trace. This should work for any head unit.

T1814 Installed - Issue?

I did the usb cable mod and installed the 1814 last weekend... Having a problem. Tried to plug in an ipod (2nd G) and an iphone (3G) to the USB connection, but after about 20 sec of the display saying it was reading files, i get an error message (either "device error" or "connection error"). Was about to rip the whole thing out and start over (figuring I had soldered something incorrectly) when, for kicks, I tried a USB stick. Worked PERFECTLY...

Question is... could the ipod/iphone problems be a result of the mod done poorly or could it truly be a compatibility issue with devices.

My first thought was that the ipod/iphone would utilize the charging capability on the usb connection where the usb stick would not, so perhaps that's part of the issue.

Any input is appreciated!

Probably something I should have mentioned was test all connections and features before putting everything together...

I have 3rd and 4th gen iPod Touches and they work fine. When you say iPod, I assume the older units with the hard drives. I did read somewhere that there were incompatibilities with the older units as well as the smaller iPods. Some just don't work, others needed a software upgrade, while others needed an adapter. The adapter was required because Apple changed the way the charging worked. If you can, I would find someone with iPods like mine and test. If it works then your issue is with compatibilty. If it doesn't work then it must be a wiring issue. It could also be the two issues, incompatibility and wiring issue.

I have had this USB mod done for a few weeks. I encountered similiar problems with the headunit not functioning with the iPod. it somehow resolved itself. But I too, was about to rip the whole thing apart until it tried a USB stick. Also turning the car on and off seems to clear the problem.
My only problem with this setup is how slow the headunt scrolls through the iPod artist selection. I have about 65 gigs on the headunit and obviously a lot of artist. the time it takes for the headunit to load the next few artist is kind of a bummer.

Scion pioneer T1814 Audio system manual

I have been looking for a scion audio manual for a month now since I won a scion t1815 on ebay for $50.00 plus shipping.

Today, I found this at ebay, the guy is selling scion t1815

its for t1814 but I think will work for t1815 too. I scanned the manual and everything look similar to t1815. Hope the link helps.

Hey I was looking at a t1815 for my 3rd Gen. I just had one question. Is there any soldering required for just an aux input. I don't need iPod control and was hoping it was just plug in?

In my 07 SR5, it was just plug and play. Just have to solder USB cable for Ipod Aux.

Quick update

Newbie here and I just wanted to say thanks and a give some head ups.

I am a recent owner of a "new to me" 2003 T4R. I saw this thread and picked up a brand new T1815 on ebay for $61 and did the mod last night.

A couple of things:
1) on the USB cables take the shield and twist it up and solder it to one of the ground legs of the proprietary USB connection (see picture with yellow arrow where to solder it to). This will help give a better signal since it is shielded now with it grounded a both ends.

2) Rather the squeeze the cable out I modifed the heat sink to bring it out right next to the 2 RCA outputs which provided a natural strain relief.

3) I used a 2m iPod cable (since I only use it with my iPhone) and routed it into the center console (had to drill a hole to thread it though).

4) I used the anntenna "Y" connector and the mini to std adpater so I can get better FM reception than just the single antenna input.

Overall sounds great (and looks very clean) and the iPod integration is very nice for a factory deck. Now I need to update the speakers in the doors, likely will do a new Kicker 6x9 in the front and leave the back doors stock.

I recommend this to anyone and the mod is not really that hard to get the USB cable out.

Man I was so excited about this mod. I finally got a GREAT price on a T1814 and spent time today trying to get it soldered. All I ever got was a USB Input Error. I took it apart and tried to solder it again and got the same thing.
Man I am frustrated.

Guys, how did you get the 3.5mm port hooked up? I have the T1814 with a soldered USB extension cable that works, but I rather have 3.5mm input. I saw one member did this but didn't go into detail.

Can some one help please. I need a pinout of the grey USB cable. Seems the T1819 out of a 2012 Scion is different inside the radio. The USB pins are not labeled at all on the board and the board looks completely different. I found 5v and gnd of course but the data pins are not labeled at all. If I had the pinout of the grey cable end to end to the USB cable, I can work backward from there. I will be sure to post what I find when I get it working. I really dont see any point in spending $56 on an adapter when I can simply solder in a USB extension with your help. Thanks in advance!

Troubleshoot T1814 Problems

I did a T1814 install into my '96 FJ80 and had 6 months of troublefree use until today. This morning when I started up my truck, with the radio ON there was no audio. It did not matter what the source was wether set to FM, CD or USB Ipod. The radio gave me no faults and appeared to be on and reading my Iphone. So I pulled the fuse for the radio, leaving it out for 1/2 hour before reinstalling. The radio worked again for a while and it quit, again. No audio. I repeated this again removing the fuse, leaving it out for a while, putting it back in and I can get the stereo to work for a little before I lose audio again.

I soldered a USB in when I did the original install and have made no changes since. I did jump start somebody's car a few days prior; not sure if these radios are sensitive to jump starts.

Anyone got any suggestions? I afraid my sweet $60 Pioneer 1814 might be toast.

Finally did some troubleshooting. I don't think the fault is with the radio. I disconnected the smaller cannon plug and I got sound to come back to the front speakers, buy the same plug powers he night lights on the head. It goes blank with the headlights on. More troubleshooting to come, but I'll leave for now as I do have functionality back.
