I can confirm that in 2006 the Toy engineers fixed this potentially fatal flaw...

In fact they predicted that sometime in the future someone would powerwash their car and they really hoped that they would first do the research and buy the updated model. Alas, 8 years later, a lexus nut proved them right and wrong.

Thank god I traded in my 03 for my 08, now I can finally power wash my interior safely :reddance:

I can't reveal my sources, but I can confirm that exactly eight minutes after you posted your initial thread, the president of the Toyota Motor Company in Japan ordered the production lines shut down worldwide.

He then summoned every engineer to the auditorium for a mandatory meeting. The engineer who designed the interior of the 2003 4runner was then called up onto the stage and forced to commit ritual Seppuku after confessing that his design was inadequate and brought shame upon the Toyota name.

Following that meeting, the entire engineering department was split into two groups.

The first group was tasked with redesigning the ECU location in the 2003 4runner. Their final solution was a 12' tall (4 meter) mast located in the center of the roof with a waterproof box on top which contains every ECU in the vehicle. With this setup, the 4runner is capable of crossing an 11 1/2' deep stream without risking damage to the ECU. At the same time, the engineers designed shark repellent dispensers in the headlights.

The second (and larger) group was given the mission of designing a time machine to take the first group back to 2002 where all of the changes would be applied retroactively.

The good news is that you don't have to do anything, just wait and your 2003 4runner will automatically be retrofitted with the 12' mast and shark repellent dispensers without you even knowing it.

Even better, once this happens, this thread will disappear as if it had never existed, and all the brain cells I lost reading through it will be magically restored.

Problem is, you are making an a$$ of yourself. You are the only person, that this poster has ever heard of, to pressure wash the interior of his/her T4R. In addtition, this poster has never heard of a T4R owner every "frying" their ECM... er, aside from you. I've owned several trucks and SUV's, and thus far, the T4R has been the most reliable, well built, on and off road capable vehicles for me thus far. I'm sorry, that you seppuku'ed (google it) yours, but your thread has gotten a little ridiculous. I mean, a keyboard? Good grief.

Truth is: I can't change the past, what's done is done.
I wanted this to be constructive discussion, but it ended up being destructive.
People own trucks and love them them. I do too. Coming in and saying they are all bad was wrong. All cars have flaws. I just wanted to warn everyone of the one that I found, and I guess I was overly exited about it. If the job I did was inadequate, well, so be it, the flaw is still there.

I checked 06 and on connector is still there.

The exact same logic applies to your post - just as the Xperia wasn't designed to be put in a washing machine, the 4Runner wasn't designed to have a high pressure stream of water sprayed into the cabin. One would think that even a person with the thickest of skulls could grasp that concept.

I am mad that this has happened before. EXACTLY the same way as it did on my truck.
And some people were PROVING the fact that they can drive through water 4Runner is safe.
I guess yes it will bring you home because it takes sever hours for problem to emerge.
Toyota is counting on YOU to BLAME YOURSELF!

This guy got scarred and ran to a mechanic.

My cost:

$160 ECU from EBAY
$2 Connector from Junk yard
$112 Reprogramming by a dealer

BOATLOAD of time spent finding the problem, Reading though manuals. Familiarizing with security features that kill engine.

Wasted:
$30 Locksmith servicecall
$112 Dealer undo what locksmith did

BUT Everyone is missing my point here.
While power washing may be extreme, 1 inch of WATER in a cabin of an off road vehicle is NOT! I can see DAEWOO failing with that NOT A FREAKIN 4Runner! And I refuse to agree with ANYONE here that Cars need to be prepared and stuff for occasional water that enters inside.
IT IS A DESIGN FLAW!!! :ak472: AND I DO BLAME TOYOTA FOR IT.
NOT only I BLAME for Connector location (just 2" higher would NOT have fried my and yours ECU)
BUT, That connector carries Hi Voltage Hi Current Wires next to Low voltage low current computer Data wires. STUPID!

I am looking through Wiring manual to see where these connections go.
I suffered for everyone here and I feel like a freakin Jesus :smokin:

So to recap: I Should have expected 4Runner to be a p***y and carefully wiped 10 years of dirt, dust and salt. I should Disconnect my battery before Entering High water that MAY (God Forbid) enter inside of my Paved road capable 4 by 4. And lastly INSTALL Windows 8.1 on my ECM So the whole hunk of metal Stinks. :whipping2

I know, it sounds bad, but I did this to many vehicles, including my 92 and 95 Previas. There wasn't a lot of water. I'll post pics later. I was at the Junk Yard checking out other cars and NONE had any connectors located this low. NONE! even cheap small sedans.

Dude, if it's such a crappy vehicle, sell it and get something that you can power wash the interior. I'm sure your junkyard has something that will work great for you.
