I agree with you that we need more spice in the polls. "Best Mod" maybe isn't the best idea out there, but what about "Best homebuilt bumper", or "Best cargo management system"? Not a poll on who spent the most on an aftermarket rack or lights, but things that members built from scratch.

I'd like to see a "Best body damage" or "Best flop" poll too. Maybe "Biggest spash during a water crossing"? :D

I like the idea of the best home built stuff. While there are companies that have tens of thousands of dollars worth of high end tooling that make some very nice products, I am a huge fan of the home fabricator. I do not have a whole lot of home fabricated products on my runner, but EVERYTHING that has been done to it has been with my own hands.

As for the best flop... I'm not really sure that any of us in the classic section, let alone the other sections that have 15k+ into their rigs can even compete in that competition. I would be highly upset if I flopped my rig and I'm in a cheaper 1st gen that doesn't cost thousands to swap a body. On the flip side, a dent here and there is okay :D
 
To me, the idea of focusing on specific parts is an interesting idea, but not something to run for a whole month each. I see that as more of a "feature of the week" deal, not a monthly poll. If you want it as a month-long thing, maybe nominate multiple features to showcase, then take the top five categories as mini-polls for the month. One of the questions I would have for that, though, is what's the reasonable longevity of the idea--as in, there are only so many specific parts that are worth taking a long look at. If you're talking home-built stuff, that eliminates the majority of the members, as most don't have those capabilities, so they simply buy what's available. To summarize, I don't have any clear-cut winner ideas either, but maybe these thoughts can help narrow down the choices.
 
I feel like "best homebuilt bumper" is still a mod specific idea. Replacing a bumper is a mod, we'd just be going one step further and saying is has to be homemade. I didn't mean to make the mod specific idea sound like it had to be expensive things. Hell, Plasti-dipping is considered a mod, we could have had a month that was "who's the best with a $10 can of plasti dip". I hope I didn't ruin the idea with a lack of an explanation.

Having said that, BucknutBob makes a good point that if we get too specific with the criteria for nominating, then it's going to eliminate the majority of rigs and no one is going to playing along. Maybe thats not exactly what he said but thats how I took it :D

Either way, as much as I like the idea. I do also like how we're doing it now and if everyone is on board with the fact that the older gens aren't going to be as popular, then I think everything will be fine. Maybe if in a couple years its starts to lose its popularity, then we'll revisit the idea.

because lets face it, most people here are not wheelers, for them it's looks over function, and who has the best looking rig? Slacker's.
 
Slacker definitely has a gorgeous truck, and has put a ton of work into it, but I guess I'm biased against professional efforts that are basically company advertising, and lean more towards the private owners. Clearly just a personal choice, as the truck is impeccable--it just feels too much like voting for a cost-no-object magazine project truck.

Yup. Slackers' truck is the absolute bomb, and putting him in a contest against the rest of us is like bringing a nuke to a fistfight.

and no magazines yet !! :) .

although yes I do own a fiberglass shop , and yes I do make money at it ,This truck was a personal choice , and I spent many hours , infact MOST of it was on my own time after hours and on weekends . so although it is "related" to my company , I still built it , and my passion and hobbie and business is building toyota trucks .. sometimes the lines get crossed , as I usually work 7 days a week . fact is .. I built it myself !!

Thanks for nomination, and the votes! There are some really nice 1st gens on this site and it's great to be recognized. I like to keep my stuff neat and as 'stock' as possible but Corey is the king as far as that goes. :)
