Tacoma or Tundra 5100's?

Alignment shop said my shock bushings are too worn to be able to align it... so time for new shocks even though i wasn't planning on it for a few months.

I see guys don't like the tacoma ones because their too soft... and i've heard of people going with the tundra ones.

Which ones should i go with?

Since you have tundra trd coils, I say go with the tundra 5100s for sure. That's what I have and it rides great on the 2nd setting.

nice thanks for the input. i think i'll go with the tundra, but how stiff are they? do the ladies seem to mind with those?

I think Ive read online about people being unhappy with the tacoma 5100s being too soft and don't match well with the tundra coils. With the tundra 5100s its stiffer than stock, but my stock suspension felt like a boat. The 5100s feel nice and tight, but not hard or bumpy. and my gf has no complaints and I'm happy with em lol

I would get Tundra rears regardless, and with your TRD Tundra front coils I would get Tundra fronts as well.

Tundra 5100's it is... do you guys think i can still use my top plates? i ran the toytec 3/4 spacer with ext studs. idk if i still have the original studs though. i'm ditching the top plate spacer obviously so i doubt i can use the extended studs with just 5100's and no spacer

I have Tundra 5100's with my TRD coils set on lowest perch setting and they're a perfect match for the progressive coils. It can't get any better than that as far as comfort and handling/balance goes. When I go off curbs and large dips, there is absolutely no bounce and makes it feel as of it never existed until the back end goes over it.

I'd say leave the 3/4" spacer in if you want to stay at that 1.2" additional lift height over the 2" TRD coils. I wouldn't recommend pre-loading the coil via the perch any more than a couple notches if you want to retain the ride comfort though.

lol why would you want the spacers without the extended studs?

I have extended studs that I bought a few months ago. I have so much damn rake and wanna level it out lol. I got 5.5" in the rear and like 2.25" up front. To get it near level I think I'll have to adjust the 5100s all the way on the highest setting and I don't think it'll ride as nice as it does now on the second setting, so I wanna throw in some top plate spacers. If you decide to sell, I'm your guy! :)

you know... i thought of this. what does anyone think?? should i run the 5100's on the 1st or 2nd setting and run the top plate spacer on top?? is this a good idea?

will someone chime in on this... i'm gonna go get them assembled here soon... should i use the top plate spacer with the 5100's on a lower setting?

seems like it would be less pre-load on the springs if i did it this way...

Top plate spacer adds no additional pre-load since its sitting above the tophat and not sandwiched in between. If you raise the perch setting, you're increasing pre-load and therefore likely reducing some of the progressive travel.

The fallback of the large top plate spacer is that it'll cause your front axles to extend down even further at full droop which will stress the CV joints more especially when 4wd is engaged. I'm sure you already noticed the droop when installing them the first time. The typical spacer I've seen are 3/8" for TRD setup. Other times 1/4".

I know the Tundra 5100's were about an inch longer than the factory Tokico, so add that 1" plus your 3/4" spacer and there's your total additional droop over OEM stock.

well i put the bilies in the middle setting... i'm gonna try it with and without the spacers... could always go down to toytec and pick up the 1/2" ones if i end up needing to be somewhere in the middle

Here is a good read:
4RNR.NET

Looks like this guy had issues such as tearing a boot during full droop when he was using two 3/8" spacers stacked which equivalent to a 3/4" spacer. He ended up removing and using just one 3/8" top spacer on each coil. I corrected my post above when I sited a 5/8" instead of the 3/8" spacer as being commonly used.

It's good that you live in driving range of Toytec. Instant gratification.
