Tail gate problem-Electrical

Hey folks.
My tail gate won't stay closed quite enough to engage the sensor for my power window. I actually need someone leaning against the tail gate to get it pushed in enough to engage. Any thoughts on how a klutz like me can work this out?
Thanks and please be patient as i have a few more noob questions to come.
Thanks all
Dwayne

What year is this? I have opened and closed my window before with the tail gate open on mine, it doesn't have to be shut.

Its an '88 4cyl 5-speed
I played around with it for quite awhile yesterday and tried a bungee cord to "suck it in" but finally came up with the idea to "build up" the latch area with tin foil so the latch on the gate has more to grab when i shut the gate. This actually worked well and i seem to have it solved for the time being. As for the window going up or down when i have the gate down? No go with my rig.
She will need rust work to the tail-gate in the future so i will fix it properly then
