Tailgate Hates Me

It seems that all too often when I open the tailgate, things fall out. Doesn't seem to matter if it's parked downhill, uphill or on the level. Stuff falls out no matter how slowly I open it. Sometimes it small items, other times it's large, like a 3/4 ton truck caliper assembly today.

One thing that does not fall out is dirt. It sticks in there like Gorilla Tape and defies my shop vac.
Seems that I have to bite the bullet and go for the hated cargo net or similar painful contraption!

I have a hammock style cargo net that is tremendously useful for smaller items like groceries and home depot runs. larger items I can tie down with d rings and straps. why don't you like cargo nets - they are so useful

I just find cargo nets to be a slightly different annoyance. I have one in the car and it tucks away nicely, but seems to get in the way a lot of the time.

I have a lot of my stuff in gear bags and they handle most of it. But invariably something tips or falls out, and as soon as I crack open the gate, it squirts out the bottom.

You dont dress nice and it doesn’t like the lipstick color you choose and you always wear flats instead of pumps. Dress nice and maybe the gate will treat you better.

yeah i know... i still use milk crates, or boxes or anything square or rectangle when i go on my costco/grocery runs....

i've had a few watermelons try to escape on its own when i open the hatch, only to smash itself against the hot concrete floor. It's always the god damn watermelons man.....

I have the same problem. At first, I put up with chasing watermellons, cantaloupe and such; started getting pretty irritated when I ruptured gallons of milk and water; had enough when I busted a 1.5L bottle of Jim Beam.

I bought the Toyota cargo net that goes across the rear of the cargo area (3rd row), but it doesn’t help stop stuff from rolling out. It only attaches at the bottom corners, but the center is free to flip out of the way and allow anything to pass by. The net is handy, though, for stashing rolling objects, as it’s basically folded and allows you to insert stuff inside.

You don't have a tailgate, you have a liftgate. Tailgates are on actual trucks. Surely you have seen those.

I have a cargo basket thing that I got for like $15 on Amazon. i use it when I need it, but honestly... never had anything fall out of the back. You driving like Jason Stathom in The Transporter?

I think that you may have identified the root of the problem. I have owned 4Runners for 3 generations now, and this one seems to be the best at tricking me. Thinking about it, this is the only one with the backup camera. It sees me coming and sets the trap for me.
Looking back on things, I did wear this awful pair of slip on boat shoes with high white socks when accessing the rear of the vehicle once or twice and that likely initiated the dislike.

I have a cargo basket thing that I got for like $15 on Amazon. i use it when I need it, but honestly... never had anything fall out of the back.

I’m not 100% sure, but isn’t there a difference in floor height between 3rd row trucks vs. 2 row? On the 3rd row, the floor height is flush with the opening, thus there is nothing to stop anything from rolling out. I think I saw a photo around this site somewhere where I could see that the 2 row trucks have their floors a bit deeper, thus there is a substantial lip to stop stuff from falling out.

I've lost a few things out of the back of my tailgate, cleaning up a 3 pack of red spaghetti sauce from Sam's club was fun, I also lost a beer growler full of expensive beer to the driveway once

This. I use mine all the time. For exactly the reasons stated in the OP.

I use a leftover cargo net from a previous vehicle, I believe it was my 2017 explorer. I attached the top 2 loops to the top hooks and then made a couple of paracord extensions with small carabiners to attach the bottom corners. Now I have a cargo net a little over a foot high across the entire back to block things from falling out.
