And to maybe answer the question of "why they still put them in", from what I recall from reading is that it is due to the supply they had. The choice is either shut the production of cars down, or roll with the defective airbags and do a recall later. It would be a few/several years for the new, non-defective airbags to catch up production and meet demand. Toyota and others rolled with the defective ones because they are in the supply system, it was impossible to get the new bags, and the defective bags are fine for a period of time until they of course do a recall due to the safe time lapse.

Had mine replaced, for free, by the dealer today after calling Friday for an appointment. Those that brought the default to light have also put together guide lines for failure rates for the affected areas. Even in Zone A, the most at risk, projected failure rates are 6-9 years after the airbag is manufactured. That projected rate isn't from Takata, thats from the NHTSA. So, you're really not at risk as long as you get the recall done within the specified window. Nothing to see here.

Keep in mind that there are so many airbag replacements available, so the regulators had to allow it to be done in stages. I posted some lawsuit info on injuries or deaths from airbags not yet subject to the recall. If you read about Takata quality control it was a joke. Chewing gum in airbags, etc.
Based on the cases I found, I do not think any are "safe", maybe safer than older recalled Takata bags, but definitely still a risk...

yeah not officially anyway...I was waiting for parts on my 2010 mustang gt for over 3 years.
