That's easy for them to say. They're not the one riding around in my truck with me. It obvisously poses some risk, or they wouldn't be drawing lines in the sand and saying unreasonable.

Death Trap? Really?

28.8 million airbags recalled. 24 deaths attributed to airbags. Less than 1 in a million odds. The odds of dying in an airplane crash are lower. I'd think the worrying about things like that is going to kill you faster than an airbag.

Complicit implies illegal activity. I don't think anyone broke the law. But yes, any manufacturer who works with Takata (now bankrupt) should be questionable, in my opinion. I was an insurance underwriter for 10 years. They went with Takata because some underwriter crunched the numbers and decided that few enough people would die and they would save a bunch of money. Illegal? No. Unethical? Hell yes. Do I think Toyota is alone? No, but this is a Toyota forum and I own a Toyota. I'm sure it's talked about elsewhere.

Still does not explain that after 2 decades of deaths that they are still putting this companies reputation into cars. Does it take 20 years to realize this? They recalled cars and then put the same crap in the new models only to be recalled years later. Why do we have these proven deathly components in a 2016 car? In reality who knows if there will be another recall on the later years. Theres no guarantee.

This is the part that is indefensible by Toyota, but people in this forum will sure try. They knew since 2009 that the airbags were killing people. They decided it was cheaper to kill a few more people than to replace the airbags. Then they killed too many people and got recalled. Now Toyota says, no problem, we'll get you a new airbag. The blood is on their hands, and in the end, it will cost them more than doing the right thing to begin with. If this doesn't bother you as a Toyota owner, then you have no ethical compass.

since many thousands of drivers got killed because of these defective air bags you should drive any vehicle with a professional hockey uniform .. also goggles.. LOL...

this company manufactured probably many millions of these bags that do hurt people.. many vehicles affected . they replaced these in humid regions first as this was then noted that the air bags did blow off improperly and some a few did die. the older vehicles got replaced first now the newer vehicles. yes my 2016 did have defective air bag and Toyota knew about it .. reason they and other companies installed these bad bags was no other option !!!

calm down and just get the bags replaced.. buy another vehicle well you could have a whole load of recalls on stuff .. GM/DODGE/FORD etc..

I understand the concern. But this is not a Toyota issue. Basically all mfrs affected made the decision to put Takata airbags in knowing they would have to be recalled. But this was done at that point to ensure adequate supply to replace currently recalled airbags which were actually nearing their affected timeframe. As I see it the only options they had was to do what they did or shutdown production of a lot of vehicles, which probably would have cost them the company. So yeah I’m okay with what they did. As much as I don’t want somebody having to tear apart my vehicle. I’d rather keep Toyota around for the foreseeable future.

They're punished by consumers, like myself, deciding to not purchase from them anymore. Trying to make a comparison between a corporation and an individual person is ridiculous.

I Googled "takata airbag recall overview". The first two hits offer everything one would want to know.

Briefly, the problem is exposure to high heat and humidity over time (years of exposure) can cause metal parts inside the air bag to explode and shoot out of the bag. Expect ongoing testing to identify more vehicles since corrosion, material degradation, the use of a chemical drying agent and environmental exposure are the root causes.
