Taking of Fibreglass top

Am i doing this right. I have taken off the fitting and exposed the bolts. I guess there are 4 fittings to be removed .

Very dusty so the top must have been off before

What is this bolt ? Weird shape..guessing it just stays...

Is this the back wiper connection. I guess i just unscrew it ?

You're on the right track. Remove all trim panels to expose the bolts on both sides and the top. The "weird screw" is just a stud for alignment. It will stay there and it helps align the top when you put it back on. The electrical connection and hose in your past pic is for the rear wiper. Unplug the connector and disconnect the hose for the wiper. After removing all the mounting bolts then have a buddy help you lift the top off. Enjoy!
 
Yeah bud without being near the car to look.. Just follow all the bolts all the way around.. And up the top near the tin roof there are covers with bolts under.. There should be a plug with wires on the left side as u look at the back that run from the side panel up to the wiper.. Then I stand inside and just left up with my back to crack the seal so to speak as I lift it off as mine is a little sticky...

I took off the bolts and 'put my back into it' and it kinda budged ....and then i realized i had forgotten the overhead ones by the cabin.

So ..4 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 bolts later....( and screws and 4 fittings )

Heave hoh.........dont want to break anything...and yep...pops up.. relief :) ( will leave it on for now )

So all ready for my FedEx shipment :hungry:

You're entering summer down there, correct? We're more worried about getting the tops back ON for winter. Here's a pretty good write up on how to take the top off. Note the infamous "bolt A" is what causes the rear glass to be able to raise and lower. Carefully store those plastic side pieces when you take them off as they are brittle and it's hard to find replacements.

The whole 4Crawler site is very good and I've made one purchase from him, a seat riser kit, and it came in two days. Same continent but opposite coasts.

That ratchet wrench kit you purchased is interesting. We don't have that brand here. What country was it manufactured in?

EDIT: It's BOLT B that controls the back window. It's correct on 4Crawler, just not recalling it correctly.

Thanks for the info. Just checked and its made in NZ..from that store actually in the picture.

So Bolt A is important...hmmm..Gotta be careful with that one. Its the bolt shorter than all the rest then...will take a look tomorrow. Interesting...now i know why some of them might be broken.....i am thinking now that my top never has been off which is why works perfect.

And yep. I will take care of those plastic bits.

So i phoned up today about my softopper as it was still in customs....figure i must have to pay import tax...i did...'bout 200 dollars...its worth it.

So. Due to arrive tomorrow Friday. All set for the weekend :). About time..have not driven the truck all week as the top is ready to come off

I just got a hard-to-find (for a reasonable price) 1989 Factory Service Manual. It's BOLT B that controls the back window. :ybrick: It's shorter than the other bolts. 4Crawler recommends using a Sharpie to mark the fiberglass top to keep the bolts straight. 4Crawler has it correct on his site but I wrote it wrong in the above post.

I bought a Softtopper too but won't put it on 'til next spring. It's getting cold but I was afraid they'd stop making them. It seems that most of the aftermarket stuff they used to make for 1st generation 4Runners is being discontinued. Granted a lot of it was stuff like running boards and the windshield visors...

Ok. So took the top off. The instructions about using your back and 'walking' the top towards the back so it is at 'tipping point' works 100%.

I had no help ( was up early ) but could handle it comfortably by myself....although when i was using the truck as a fulcrum ( when tipping) i did a bit of damage to the plastic....but its the price i paid for doing it myself.

Winters are mild here so cant see the top going back on. May not be the best way to store it ( have cushions on the bottom) but since i live in the city i dont really have much options.

The top looks great. That is beautiful scenery. I love the fact that you have a diesel Surf. They were not offered in the states. I went paging through the NZ eBay for an emblem like the rectangular one on your tailgate. I have State of Virginia Surfrider Foundation license plates, sort of a nod to the Surf:
