talked to Bilstein today...new 5100 shock info

I'm ordering shocks for a suspension job / lift kit and was confused about the availability of Bilstein 5100's for 3rd gen 4runners. All the information I found on this and other forums indicate that 5100's are only offered for Tacoma (24-249928 fronts) or Tundra (24-188265 fronts) ie Bilstein does not make a 4runner specific 5100.

This may have been true previously, but is not true today. The Bilstein Catalog shows separate 5100 part numbers for Tundra, Tacoma and 4runner front and rear. I called Bilstein and spoke to a knowledgable rep who confirmed that Bilstein makes 5100 shocks that are engineered for 3rd gen 4runners. Part numbers are 24-248730 front and 24-249966 rear. He couldn't tell me when they started offering these, but they are specifically engineered for 3rd gen 4runner.

Many after market suppliers (like Wheelers and ToyTec) offer either Bilstein Tundra or D558 front shock for 4runners. Bilstein told me that D558 part number refers to F4-BE5-D558-TO, which was a shock they manufactured specifically for Race Car Dynamics 95-02 Tacoma lift kit. He also said, this shock should not be used for 4runners.

I'm not sure if this is new info or just lesser known, but it seems that more people in our community should be aware they don't have to choose between Tundra or Tacoma 5100's, and that Bilstein engineered 5100 shocks specifically for our 3rd gen 4runners.

Has anyone used the 4runner 5100's part# 24-248730 fronts? Please let me know if is more to this story than what I've found as I'll be ordering my 4runner specific 5100's very soon to go with my new OME 880 /906 coils.

Make sure they come with new rubber parts and washers.
The 4600 series front shocks I got from Bilstein didn't.

Interesting. I may be in the market for some new springs (OME) and I was considering the 5100's. I wonder what is different between these and the ones for the tundras? Is one better if you are planning to lift approximately 2 inches?

They have one less height setting and are slightly shorter, but are the correct length and valving for the 4runner and will ride a little better than the Tundra ones. And you wont have to change the bushings to make them fit.

They ALWAYS should, but sometimes boxes get opened, parts fall out etc. Call Bilstein at 858-386-5900 and they will get the proper stuff out to you.

Thanks Chas, that's great. How much is a 4-pack? I can't seem to find them grouped as a 4-pack on your website, and listed separately its unclear whether they're priced individually or for a pair. It is interesting the other vendors haven't caught on. I spoke with someone at Wheeler's today and this was the first he had heard of it and seemed pretty interested.

Keep us updated on how the install and ride. I'm very interested in changing my set up. The OME shocks I have now are a little rough for the wash board roads we have here in N. Arizona.

OK, great. That's a good price. One last question, are the rears (24-249966) the correct length to pair with OME 906 coils (approx 2" lift for a 2000) or would you recommend something a little longer? Do you guys carry ARB/ OME coils? Didn't see them on the website.

The 24-249966 rear shocks are rated at 0-2" of lift and should work just fine, if you go any taller then you will want the rear shock off the 03+ 4th/5th gen runners to compensate for the length.

Great, do you guys sell OME 880 coils as well? Also, do you offer the fronts pre-assembled, ie new top plates, isolaters, studs and cushions with the 880s installed over the bilsteins? If so, how much would that run?

I do offer all of the ARB / OME line. Unfortunately until I get moved into my new 3000 sq/ft shop I am not offering any services. Probably 6-8 weeks before we do.

I tried the 4th gen shocks with my 890s and they were too long. By the time I got them mounted, they had maybe an inch or 2 of travel left. Had to send them back and continue to use my Tundra 5100s. I think the shocks would be perfect for a 4+ " lift.

Stay with the the Tundra's. They're perfect for the added weight & travel of the springs we use on our rigs.

Tundras work fine if you have them already, Bilstein is just offering an easier direct fit option here.
