talked to Bilstein today...new 5100 shock info

the Bilstein 33-187174 shocks are too long for a 3" lift. if you want 5100 shocks for the rear, get the ones for the 1999-2006 Tundra but you need to replace the lower mount bushing to suit the 4Runner mount. Thanks for the advice. I ended up just ordering the regular 5100s for my Surf. After measuring from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender on my truck and one that was stock, I determined mine sat 1.75” higher.

I’m planning on a 3” lift using 5100. I plan to use the ome 881 front and 890 in the rear. I was just about to order off wheelers until I found this thread and now I’m confused. Wheelers offers 2 different front shocks that they claim are both for the 4Runner the BE5-D558 and the 24-248730. They also offer 2 rears, the 4-249966 which they say is for up to 2”, and the BIL 4R5100 which is for 3”. I had 558 and the 4R5100 in my cart but now it seems neither of those shocks are 4Runner specific. Is that correct? I wanted 4Runner valving for a softer ride and warranty. Now I’m worried that what I was about to buy is not for the 4Runner, and the 4Runner specific models are only meant for 2” lifts. Am I understanding this correctly? If so what should I do? The D558 is the 5100 front shock for the Toyota Tacoma. some people in these forum say that the D558 is valved too soft for them since the Tacoma is lighter than the 1996-2002 4Runner, however, it fits the 1996-2002 4Runner.


The 24-248730 is the 5100 front shock meant for the 1996-2002 4Runner. The 24-249966, is the 5100 rear shock meant for the 1996-2002 4Runner but is up to 2" of lift only.



The BIL 4R5100 is actually the 24-100144. It is a 5100 rear shock meant for the 1999-2005 Toyota Tundra. However, by replacing the lower mount bushing, it can be used on the rear of 1996-2002 4Runner with lifts of up to about 3.5 inches (hub center to fender lip measurement of about 24 inches).



Beyond 3.5 inches of lift, you'll need the 33-187174, the 5100 shock meant for the rear of the 2003-current 4Runners (4th/5th gens) & the FJC.

So what are my options? Stick with 3” lift and use the Tacoma/tundra shocks but have no warranty?

Or switch to a smaller lift. Like maybe 906 springs in the rear and maybe keep my stock springs up front with the shocks on the second or third perch? Which would give me around 2” front and back?

My stock springs even though they have 200k on them seem to still be ok. I don’t have any rear sag. Both the front and back sit at about 20.5” center hub to fender. Actually the tears were replaced at around 140k with the spring recall.

2. Stick with 2" lift and use the 5100 shocks for the 1996-2002 4Runner.


Note that the ride comfort is also affected by the coil springs that you're using.

With option 1 I would have no warranty on the shocks correct?

Option 2 you are saying my idea of using 906 in the rear and stocks up front will actually get me 2” of lift?

I've used 4th gen 5100 & Tundra 5100's with my 8 wraps (4+" of lift) with no issues. I'd get the 4th gen for more travel.

If I were you I'd buy one of the Sonoran Steel lift kits.

I have the 33-187174 bilisten shocks on the rear of my 2000 4runner Limited 4x4 but I also have a 4inch lift front and rear on my rig they work well there kinda stiff but when the bumps happen they are hardly felt at all the 33-187174 also Got Superseded with 33-313146 is the new number hope it helps everyone
