Tampa Area Off Road Trip

Hey all. Been meaning to get around to this but I believe I met TRDPRO73, in Jax a week back(twins), and he mentioned this trip. I am in. Probably going to stay in Gainesville the 28th and re-live some college days, but mostly to avoid the 2 hour trek to Ocala. Will plan on meeting up at closest point to the park, or at the park once times are confirmed. Hear good things about this place.

How about meeting us at 9:45 am at the Pilot Travel Center right off 75 then Plan on heading to the park at 10?

..just don't get too drunk ya don't wake up

So ladies and gents. I hope you all are having a great week. I posted the other day a tentative meet up plan. If you could all read it over and make sure it sounds good!

One open issue/topic is Communication. I am going to purchase 2 Motorola walkie talkies that can be used on this trip. If anyone else has them that would be great. I do not have a CB yet and from what it sounds like most others don't either.

I just wanted to get a head count of all who will be coming. I am going to tag people in this post. If i have missed you I apologize but let me know and I will update it. Thanks!

So far coming we have:
awthorn ( me) possibly with a jeep tag along
90FoRunner
9lb taco
shotgun_willie
96BladeRunner
TRDPRO73
cpark_12
PearlWhite4R
80jay
P-A-T
WastedAccount
90FoRunner

I may also have a couple motorola walkie talkies and I'll bring them if I can find them. May get close to enough for everyone if a few bring them along. Another option would be if everyone downloaded Voxer on their smartphones but w/out cell service that could crap out on us.

I'll be meeting you guys there. Ill be on channel 12 on the cb otherwise just keep an eye out for me.

I'll be in this:

I do not condone anything illegal.

The best bang for your buck in the comm world goes to these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007H...words=uv5r&dpPl=1&dpID=51ZEMQhpoPL&ref=plSrch

It's a Ham/Amateur handheld transceiver radio. It's a dual band with ALL the frequencies in the 2m (146mhz) and 70cm (440mhz) bands. It overlaps with certain frequencies that are designated for radios that don't require a license to transmit on. Technically it's not legal to transmit on those frequencies on this radio because it has the ability to put out more power than legally allowed on those particular radio services. It's certainly not illegal to listen in though.

Im still planning on showing up.
awthorn If you can post a pic of the walkie talkie youre getting i may go out and purchase a couple to contribute

Amazon Prime Purchase

This is what I am thinking about purchasing. I have other uses for them having family and all.
4eigner, we chatted about that device before. I think it was $18 then lol. You are tempting me. What would that allow for? CB com, other HAm Com? Sorry I am rather ignorant about the htz stuff?

Pilot sounds good to me! Guess it will be a mystery on if I show or don't, but if I'm not there, leave without me. However, I have my priorities straight. Can drink any night, off-roading=special occasion and I'm bringing the champagne!

So, the pilot travel center at 9:45...I'll be there. I'm still debating on coming down Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.

I just typed out a lengthy response to this and when I went to send it, I was brought to a log in page, which afterwards brought me back to the thread. Here we go again...This is an abbreviated version of what I typed out before it all disappeared (sorry, it's late and I'm out of it.)

The radio you posted works off of Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) frequencies. These are the typical radio services that are provided with the 2-way transceivers that you can buy in the store for unlicensed use. They have designated specific frequencies that they use within a particular radio band, in this case the 70cm (440Mhz ultra high frequency band.) There are 14 designated channels (specific frequencies) for the FRS radios, some of which overlap with GMRS.

Citizen's Band (CB) radios have 40 channels (specific frequencies) within the 27 & 49 Mhz frequency bands.

The radio I posted is a dual band Amateur/Ham Radio, which operate entirely within a frequency band. There are countless specific frequencies one can choose to transmit on within the frequency bands. In this case they overlap the FRS & GMRS frequencies, but not the CB frequencies. Though it would be illegal to transmit on those frequencies, it would be highly highly unlikely that one would ever get caught doing so, especially when mobile.

The FCC license required to legally transmit on Ham/Amateur frequencies is EASY to acquire. The test is $15 and the license is good for 10 years. You need no more than a full day of study to pass the exam. All of the study material you need is online and FREE. The benefits of Ham/Amateur radio are far too numerous to put into this post.

BTW: the FRS 2-way radios have a very limited reach. Even though they advertise 35 miles in this instance, I would be VERY surprised if you could realistically do more than a couple miles on the open road.

Gentlemen, It looks like Sunday March 29th we are planning a trip to Hard Rock. All who are in say "I" and list where you are from. Maybe we can get some groups to ride in together from their area.

I know there are a good number in the Tampa Bay Area that I would be willing to try to coordinate with. Thanks!
