Tanabe medallion touring exhaust review

If you are not familiar with Tanabe, they are a JDM exhaust manufacture that is very popular in the JDM scene. Their "touring" series has been around for a long time, and as the name implies, it is designed to be very quiet and still free up the exhaust flow. Anyways, just another option for someone looking for a high quality, JDM exhaust that won't break the bank.

Here is some quick notes:

1. Very quiet. Tanabe claims no louder than 93 DB in the entire rev range. I can attest its pretty quiet after break in. I can barely hear it over the hum of my MT tires at cruising speed.

2. Price is competitive, 799ish.

3. Comes with a side exit and a exhaust dump. Both of them are currently included with the kit.

4. Side exit sits perfect if you have a stock rear bumper but may look a bit goofy if you have a high clearance rear bumper. Has a 4 inch double walled tip.

5. Exhaust dump is pre-rear axle, and points directly into the ground. So in theory it shouldn't heat up your rear axle since there is a lot of clearance. Sound difference between side and exhaust dump wasn't remarkable unless you got on the throttle and the sound was boom-ier. Still quiet cruising.

6. Uses flanges with impeccable welds. Makes it really easy to switch between side exit and exhaust dump. I've never been a fan of clamps that other manufactures use.

7. Uses 304SS stainless. No more rusty looking exhaust. My OEM exhaust kept getting alot of surface rust, 304SS should take care of the surface rust issue.

8. Installation was pretty easy. Includes all the necessary gaskets and hardware. You do have to reuse the donut gasket at the end of the Y pipe.

That’s pretty sick! I’ve had the Magnaflow, currently have the Gibson and I was looking at the new overland Magnaflow exhaust but this one might have moved to the top of the list.

With the turn down tip, do you notice any more fumes coming in? Say to the rear passenger windows, sitting idle at a stop?

I don't notice any fumes from my daily commute. However, i don't live in a climate cold enough where I have to idle the vehicle to warm up the engine either (which may change things)

You can always run it with the side exit in the winter, and exhaust dump only when you need to.

Right now i'm driving around with the exhaust dumped mainly because I have a trip planned, but i think i'm leaning towards the side exit as my favorite setup. It's more refine sounding (quieter) and more refined looking (aka. blingy).

Honestly, this exhaust is what the TRD exhaust should have sounded like. Barely noticeable at cruising, and only screams when you want it to, with OEM level quality fit and finish. (no stupid clamps)

i wish i did. I tried to capture sound w/ my iPhone but the phone can't capture the lower frequency sounds.

I’ve only ran the full length exhaust so far. The full length exhaust is quieter than the TRD Pro exhaust with no drone. It has a cleaner, deeper sound to it. It has a good sound to it when you get on the throttle. I will probably try out the exhaust with the turn down attached to it very soon. Overall it is a high quality exhaust that is fairly tame.

i found this video on youtube (not me).

it shows off the quality of the exhaust.

Dent was put in my muffler shop.

Sound doesnt capture the deepness though (same problem when i tried to record the sound).

Just imagine this sound with a really deep bass note (exhaust dump).

The side exhaust doesnt really have that deep base note.

I personally like the side exit sound better, but i don't mind the sound from the exhaust dump...i just prefer the quieter configuration more..

I bought mine from Redline360. I got it for $699. They told me 2-3 months after I already made the purchase! Checked my email later in the week and it was on its way. I received it in about 10 days. It looks like a lot of sites are back ordered.

Nice exhaust. Did you need any ATV sealant anywhere or is it a solid fit? Does it come with the usual metalized rubber donut that alot of exhaust have? Any issues with hangers?

Very fine looking exhaust you got there, congrats.

It comes with exhaust gasket flange to use between the flanges so no sealant needed, and no exhaust leaks. You do reuse the OEM donut gasket to connect to the Y pipe.

Hangers are beefy, welds are perfect. perfectly polished, and the flanges are really beefy.. Fitment was perfect. Packaging was perfect. This is all expected with tanabe's reputation.

Changes out the tips take maybe 15 min w/ very minimal tools.

I ordered mine from showstoppers and paid retail. I should have shopped around for better prices.

It gets drop shipped from the distributor's warehouse which is located in SoCal.

It arrived the next day from me.

bit pricey for 3' of pipe and a muffler lol itd match the URD y pipe tho. in terms of burning money for fun.

yeah that wouldn't make sense to get the tanabe if u want to match the Y pipe.

As for price, ya'll see what bola, Magnaflow, etc be charging these days...lol
