I have a ‘73 FJ40 and ‘13 4Runner Ltd. Wouldn’t trade either for the world. Are there things I hate about them, sure, but not enough to go back to a GM. Both those vehicles combined haven’t left me stranded (<1) as many times as that gmc truck has(>10). That I can say without a doubt. Good luck and hope you find that unicorn.

Hey hey hey let's not get on the guy too much ok? I can tell you that using my left wrist to rotate my forefinger and thumb in a counterclockwise manor in excess of 45 degrees just burns me out. Especially following the CLOCKWISE rotation of my right wrist 45 degrees just to start the damn thing.
Jesus Christ and then you have to pull the gear shift and turn that stupid round thing to direct the 4Runner where you want it to go. And apparently the 4runners also have foot operated devices to control the speed. What am I, a drummer?

Well hello there!
I really am enjoying my 2019 Silverado. It’s powerful, very spacious inside, quiet (well mostly, I’ll get to that in a second), and rides like a dream. I have the LTZ Z71 CC and have tons of bells and whistles.
I swore off Chevy long ago - my Father retired from GM so I get the employee pricing- but I decided to give them a try again. I know it’s no Toyota in regards to reliability and It has proven me correct so far...
Here’s the list at 4532 miles. Most of these issues are discussed to death in the GM Forum...
Climate control screen says “Climate Control Off” even when it’s not from time to time. Chevy knows the issue but has no resolution yet. Software related.
Rear window defogger does not work in the sliding portion.
Big one- Drivers halfshaft has 1/2” of in and out play causing a terrible jingle sound in 2wd. When in 4wd it goes away.

GM says Eaton had bad castings in the front diff causing the bearing to move. They are replacing the diffs to resolve- but it’s a crap shoot as to whether or not you get a good replacement unit.
So- as expected I’m having some issues. It’s a Chevy. I HATE going to the dealer for repairs but I’m old enough now and mature enough now to know how to deal with them to get results so, although inconvenient, it’ll be fine.
My 4Runner has 165,000 trouble free miles after being beat to death- it was an awesome vehicle! I just wanted a change- and back into a truck. The Silverado is nice in many ways that the 4Runner wasn’t. Reliability isn’t one of them.
That’s my story so far.

Always good to see posts from you. Glad you're enjoying your new truck. It makes no sense for brand loyalists to cop attitudes whenever someone purchases another brand of vehicle. Life is to be lived - buy and drive what you want, I say. I'm a die-hard Toyota guy, but they've always had a vehicle to fit my needs and budget. If I ran into a situation where that wasn't true, I might need to shop around too.

I drove Chevy’s for years when I was working and yeah, poor reliability, was seemingly always something. Them and Ford, don’t know why they can’t get it more right. Would get a Tundra but to big, Tacoma’s to F’d up these days. I really like the looks of the Chevy Colorado but just can’t take the reliability factor. Happy with the 4Runner. Hope you have good times with your Silverado.

People change vehicles for many reasons and you certainly have the right to drive whatever you want. BUT....you’re leaving Toyota and moving to GM because you want a more reliable vehicle???

I had a 14 GMC with the new 5.3L and a 17 with the 6.2L. The '14 was trouble free for 3 years and the only reason I traded it was for the 6.2L. The 17 wasn't quite so trouble free. Had a pop in the front end that they couldn't track down, bad wind noise on drivers side, and a parking brake failure. But that 6.2 was a beast!!!! Both were nice trucks with great tech, compared to anything else on the market. Toyota is so far behind on tech. I wouldn't go back. If I needed a new truck and Toyota's new Tundra isn't up to par, I'd probably go with a Ford. Noting wrong with rolling a Raptor. [emoji41]

Yeah- the Tundra is like stepping back in time- fuel mileage is a joke. Tacoma - I looked at it for about 15 minutes and said no way.
There is a lot of good about the new Silverado- I really am enjoying it. Hopefully the current issues will get resolved and that’ll be that. I have friends and family that have gotten 100,000 + trouble free miles out of theirs.
It’s funny- the Chevy guys think that is an amazing accomplishment while my 4Runner felt just about broken in at that mark, lol

Great write up antman and good food for thought. I've been thinking of trading my T4R in on a Titan Pro-4x (cummings diesel). I just bought a house and with all the work i'm doing it would be nice having a truck. I rode in a friends silverado the other day and it rode like a dream. I've owned a tundra in the past (2014) and I wasn't a fan. I do believe Toyota reliability is second to none (3 4Runners and 1 Tundra) but they truly lack the "bells and whistles" other brands have incorporated into their truck line-up. Option #2 is getting a 5x8 trailer and pulling that around when getting supplies. Thanks for the insight antman and I'll be following this thread.

Been thinking of starting a thread with all the issues with the 4runner and Toyota brand. Just so people can point it out to the fan boys that feel superior. Frame rot, air bag recall just two off the top of my head. All manufacturers have issues especially since everyone saves money on product testing. Had a 96 Ford... Yes Ford bronco that went 300,000 before selling it. Was a DD for over 20 years with no major issues( should have never sold it looking back) basic maintenance was done, never left me stranded and I never regretted the cost to fill the tank. I hope to get half the life span out of my TuRD. Time will tell.
