I'm on my third 4Runner as well, I owned an 03 Sport, an 08 SR5 and now my 17 SR5P and I absolutely LOVE my truck. I keep buying 4Runners because I like the brand and the reliability. I love the people on here that say they'd rather have a Raptor or Silverado, these trucks are not pickups nor do they pretend to be. Enjoy your Chevy Shitbox

In all fairness, sometimes you just have to unload a vehicle if it’s a piece of crap. Telling the dealer you’re trading it to that it’s a piece of crap gives them the negotiating upper hand. They’re already mostly screwing you on the trade anyway. Why would anyone empower them even more?!?! Do you honestly think the dealer is going to fix the vehicle or share the info with the next unfortunate buyer?

In the case of the 2017 Ford that I traded in for my current T4R, it was definitely a POS. I made every attempt to have Ford acknowledge and fix the problems under warranty, but they refused and said nothing was wrong with the truck. With 1800 miles of factory warranty left, I polished and cleaned the F150, made it look amazing and traded it in at a Toyota dealership for my T4R. I took a hit when I purchased it new and took and hit when trading it in. No need to be an idiot and give the dealer additional reasons to screw me. Whatever happens to the trade in vehicle from that point forward is none of my concern.

I have friends and family that have gotten 100,000 + trouble free miles out of theirs.
It’s funny- the Chevy guys think that is an amazing accomplishment while my 4Runner felt just about broken in at that mark, lol

This. People freak out when I tell them I have 130,000 miles on my 4Runner.

...uh, my last one was over 200,000 when I sold it 3 years ago. It is still driving around today. :shrug:

i used to manage a fleet of service vehicles and among a sample size of millions of miles the 3.5 gen Ford Ranger was the most reliable and had the fewest complaints and the 2nd gen Silverado was the best full size pickup. The 2nd gen Tacoma's weakness was suspension and interior, it wasn't very good for fleet service (I wasn't working there when the 3rd gen came out). In fact driving by the old office recently they didn't have any of the 2nd gen tacomas any more but still had plenty of ford rangers. We also had a single 4Runner in the fleet, and I noticed that they still have it.

If I had a better place to park it I would buy a 3.5gen Ford Ranger for Lowes trips and yard projects (you have to get the later model post-facelift with the 5 speed auto, we replaced a lot of the earlier 4 speed automatics at 60k-80k miles)

My wife convinced me to finally buy a new 4Runner in 2015. I didn't really want to get rid of my 3rd gen, but it had about 220k miles on it and the interior was falling apart. The cost of new seats was almost as much as the vehicle was worth. I've only got 50K on my 5th gen so far and it's had its share of problems, but they've all been self inflicted.

In comparison the last new GM my parents owned (who prior to this had bought a new suburban and HD2500 every 3 years for decades) required a front differential, transmission, and transfer case all replaced by 85k miles. Totally stock - even stock tire size. If there is such a thing as a pure lemon - that was this HD2500 GMC. Holy shit it was bad. Even the little stuff like interior stitching was falling apart at 50k miles and the DRLs failed so often that we just gave up on them. It was an embarrassment to american engineering and manufacturing. It was the last GM product that has ever leaked oil in their driveway. That's not to say it didn't have some redeeming qualities. It towed very well when it wasn't broken. It was supremely comfortable for long highway trips if you could stomach 10-12mpg. It had the 8.1L gas v8 and I've yet to drive another vehicle that is as smooth, quiet, and seemingly unlimited power on the highway. It's probably as close to driving an electric vehicle as I've felt in a truck. No diesel rattle, turbo whine, or exhaust noise. I'm a fan of the tundra 5.7, but the real beauty of the 8.1 was the torque at really low cruising rpms. The fatal flaw was that it was bolted to an Allison 1000 that blew apart at 80k miles, but also had numerous electronic failures along the way 4 or 5 times it had to have sensors fixed and a NP?? transfer case that seized at around 40k miles. Just an anecdote. I'd still rock an early 70's GM truck as a classic - maybe even bastardize it with a 1UZ just for the GM faithful

I'm certainly not a purist Toyota fan. But I am a believer in the Toyota manufacturing culture of continuous improvement. Toyota products are built to a higher standard of manufacturing tolerances, material science, and engineering. But that doesn't make them infallible. There's a point where the conservative tendencies become a harm. The insistence on small displacement engines with marginally adequate power is something that really should be addressed. I think we can all agree that the BOF vehicles are WAY overdue for updates in powertrain efficiency. And the 3.5L that's now already 13 years into production is not really an appropriate engine for a nearly 5000lb vehicle. The 3.5L turbo is what should be used, but we know that won't happen. Is it so crazy to think that a powerful engine working lightly can be efficient and reliable?

Never liked the V6 rangers, but boy the 4 cylinder motors on those things are rock solid. My old man had one of those and it was one of the best vehicles we’ve ever owned.

I'm tapping out. Ive had 3 4Runners, 1 new and 2 used. While I loved them all they have shown me no love in return. I have put up with sloppy steering, old style options such as no auto headlights, expensive parts, expensive upgrades and I maintained them with all the love I could and drove them like a grandma. My latest purchase was a 2016 GEN 5 4Runner SR5, beautiful machine, well cared for with low miles. I had a slight knock in the block at 1 month after purchase from a reputable dealer , many comments it was normal sound for a 4.0L engine. I took the oil pan down and she looked like she spent the night at a strip club. The glitter in the pan was overwhelming. I buttoned her up and traded her in. I used to think Toyota was superior but I'm starting to think they are running on their old reputation. I think new vehicles are starting to equal out in reliability. I am now the proud owner of a Chevy Silverado 4wd V8. I feel sorry for the sucker that will get my 4runner. I wont be back cause I'm done with Toyota so say what you will. Thanks for everyone that helped in the past but Im tapping out on Toyota's. For those of you thinking about getting one.....read the blogs before you buy

I hate to point out the obvious, but most 05+ 4runners have auto headlights. Mine does and my girls 2011 does. Is it possible that you simply did not read the manual, forgot to put in oil, abused the truck and broke it and now its "the trucks fault"...right on bro!!

I think you are better suited to driving a domestic mouth-breather car. I hear that chevy's come with a free bud light and American flag t shirt with purchase.
