TE KDSS question...

I would REALLY recommend test driving a TE or limited with KDSS! It is a fantastic addition to the on-road manners of this vehicle. It is absolutely phenomenal in the turns, considering the weight/size of these rigs, with the benefit of all the offroad articulation to boot.

Yeah, see if you can find a TE with KDSS to drive so you can compare. The limited does not come with KDSS, it comes with XREAS, which connects the shocks hydraulically... and does help handling a little bit.

Also, I posted this a year or so ago, but I'll copy/paste it here as it seem to apply:

If you check out some of the reviews online of 2010+ 4Runners, you see that the Trail Edition with KDSS has a slalom speed of 57.2 mph and a skid pad reading of .71g. Yet the SR5 has a slalom speed of 58.4 mph and a skid pad reading of .73g. The SR5 will have some more lean for sure, but it looks like it holds the road a little better according to the #s. (Note: Slalom #'s can be skewed by the different drivers, but the skid pad reading is a pretty constant measurement - no matter the driver).

Keep in mind, all of these had to crappy stock tires.

Pretty close, no doubt...wonder if the SR5 was a 4wd model.

I understand you are anxious to get the truck. I just think if you are patient you can get a used truck that doesnt have dents, scuffs, or seepage.
Its your money and you have earned the right to do what you want, im just saying slow down, look at some other trucks and make a decision as to whats best.

well, the truck sold before I could get to it, which I am thinking is good news. after reading what everyone in here has to say and doing some research, I'd rather spend my money right the first time. I have them keeping there eyes open for me at the dealership, and I have already gotten a few tips on some other possible prospects :) you guys have been a great help, thanks!

I just saw this thread and thought I would chime in. I bought my Salsa Red 2011 Trail Edition with KDSS and 11 miles on it in Denver for less than $37k. This should tell you you are better off without that one.

OK, so I test drove a TE with KDSS and an OME setup this afternoon and all I can say is wow, I'm sold. It definitely combines the quiet ride and interior size/quality of the 4th gens with the truck like ride characteristics of the 3rd gens. And yes, I definitely felt the difference of the KDSS. Corners, on ramps and uneven road surfaces were soaked up almost entirely, even with the added weight of an ARB bumper and the stiffer suspension. So long as I can convince the misses that this is what needs to happen, I am sold

Well, obviously the guys that spent the money on KDSS are going to say it's the greatest thing ever and the guys who didn't are going to play it down. There is no doubt it improves on-road ride and handling, but I don't see how it would improve off-road performance like some claim.

Bottom line is, it's not a must-have and I wouldn't tell someone to walk away from a good deal just because a truck doesn't have KDSS. I would bet that two equally modded TE 4runners, one with and one without KDSS would perform equally off-road. Take it a step further and spend that $2000 on suspension upgrades or a locking front diff and the non-KDSS TE wins.

But, if you like the way it drives, buy it. It's your money. You're going to love the truck regardless.

I rolled an SR5 ( as part of what I call an involuntary kinetic energy exchange experience).

I used the lateral mishap portion of this experience to suggest to my wife that KDSS would have sprung forth like a truck version of the Mach 5 jumping gizmos to save me, had we had it. Sold her instantly on it.

I'm not suggesting that you use the same rationale, I'm just noting that you could.

I like my KDSS.

Here's what it all comes down to. 4Runners without KDSS have smaller (more flexible) sway bars which allow them to flex more, which in turn increases the available articulation. However, the trade off for this extra articulation is less body roll control from those same swaybars.

KDSS overcomes this trade off by using a larger (less flexible) sway bar to control the body roll, but maintain the same (or possibly more) available articulation through use of a system of hydraulic cylinders.

Does it improve off road performance? Maybe, maybe not, but what it really does is give you the best of performance both on and off road.
 
Mulri terrain and crawl control

Does anyone know why Crawl Control will not activate when in Multi terrain? I asked this on this forum back in 2010 and did not get a reply.
 
I am reaching here because I do not want you to have two post's without at least an attempt to answer.....Crawl control, only in 4low? Multi Terrain, only in 4H? Just guessing ...be safe.

There is so much more that goes into slalom speeds and skip pad than what KDSS is intended to do.
I would venture a guess and say perhaps the TE with KDSS weighs more, and not only that, the KDSS also helps with articulation off road, which has nothing to do with slalom speeds.
I would also venture a guess if the skidpad and slalom was chock full of potholes the KDSS would out perform the SR5.
Thats really where the KDSS will show its advantage and what it was made for.

I second that, bought mine from Stapp Interstate Toyota, MSRP was $41k/out the door less than $37k

Don't know why, other than the owners manual says to not use both at the same time. I tried that driving up Aspen Mountain and made a heckuva ruckus! It is one or the other!
 
Alright folks, here's the deal. I have had my 3rd gen for sale for less than two days and already have a tentative buyer. That was surprisingly easy.
I have found my 5th gen! 2010, 23k original miles, KDSS, no nav in shoreline blue, never been off road. I should have it in the next couple of days. Extremely excited to get it dirty
