Tell me about your offroading with P-rated tires.

I need tires. My BFG LTs are looking dangerous these days. They've been worked very hard off-road without ever flatting but, who knows, maybe that's likely to have been the case with Ps, too. I'm seriously considering finding out first hand by getting a set of P-rated ATs. I seem to recall various people who have off-roaded Ps pretty hard and pretty often with no flats. If that sounds like you, speak up, I'd love to hear about it.

If anyone has stories of Ps flatting, I'd like to know whether or not they were aired down at the time.

JB, you know my feelings on the topic already. I would NOT put a P-rated tire on a heavy SUV, much less a SUV that goes off-road. Beyond the toughness factor, you also have to add in the extra weight and heat buildup from a heavy vehicle. In addition, little known fact, the P-rated tires have less tread depth, which may lead to tire being more vulnerable to punctures.

Why take the chance on a P-rated tire? Airing down a P-rated tire is just asking for trouble!

You're undoubtedly right about the off-roading. I may have had a momentary brain cramp and I appreciate the cold water. Gotta disagree about LTs for normal pavement driving, though, unless we're talking about something considerably heavier than the 4runner.

Yep, that's one of the biggest differences between the tire types and one of the reasons Ps handle heat better on pavement.

This is why picking proper tires for your needs is so important...and this is why i have criticized Josh (HB4X4) in the past about his selection(s).

Yep, that's one of the biggest differences between the tire types and one of the reasons Ps handle heat better on pavement.

Remember, if you're gonna air down, then you need to get tires that are DESIGNED TO BE AIRED DOWN. Examples: BFG AT KO, Goodyear SilentArmor, and the MTs. Please don't get Nitto TGs or Bridgestone Duelers and expect to air down properly without consequences!

Thai... I jsut got the Nitto TG's and they are LT tires. Why do you say they arent good for airing down? I have searched numerous threads about tires and was always a BFG AT fan but got my NTG's for a steal. I also went with them because of all the people on here that wheel them hard and have not had any issues.

My opinion is that the Nitto TG is not really a hardcore off-road tire like the BFG AT KO or even the Goodyear SilentArmor. If you read Nitto's website, then you will see that more than half of its advertisement is about its ON-ROAD mannerism. No 3-ply sidewall. Its sidewall is no stronger than your average highway-bias SUV tire (REVOs, Michelin, etc.). Airing down exposes a lot of the sidewall. Therefore, your sidewall is very vulnerable to rocks. If your sidewall is not strong, then you're asking for trouble. I hope that you got LT Nittos, and not P-rated Nittos. When i had Nittos a few years ago, i had the chance to feel the thickness of the sidewall (prior to tire dealer putting them on my truck). The sidewall is NOT thick at all!

Now, just to prove my point even further, Nittos has come out with a true off-road tire: http://nittotire.com/#index.tire.trailgrappler This tire is worth it IMHO. And you can clearly see that Nitto advertises this tire as an off-road proven tire...while the TG is more of a highway tire with aggressive thread.

Also I could not pass up the deal I got on the TG's I found a shop that would mount and balance 5 of these tires for $850. So I only paid $143 per tire, then to top it off when I asked the local shop to match my price so I wouldn't have to drive an hour they did even though they said it would mean they were only making $30 on the deal. Told them it would be a couple days since i was waiting to sell some things on CL. One of them being my 1/5 scale RC car. Turns out one of the calls i got was from the owner of the local shop that was going to match the deal. I ended up trading the RC car and paying $100 to get all 5. Yes I am one of the smart ones that bought all 5 so that my spare matched the others and therefor can also do a 5 tire rotation.

JB. The best thing to do is consider how much time you spend on the road and how much and how hard you off-road and if you are going to deflate when you do off-road. I was running Michelin LTXs before I got my recent tires as posted above and they worked just fine for mild to moderate wheeling however I rarely lowered my pressure and when I did it was only to 20-25 since they were mainly a street tire.

I agree with Thai in the fact that with our base rate a C rated tire is not enough and recommend a load range D or if you pack heavy or tow considerable amount of time and E rated.

Hey, Im thinking about selling my car... a 96 mustang gt with 70,000 miles on it.. kept in very good shape.. then im planning to get a 96- 4 runner.. I was looking at isuzu troopers just because they are cheap 4x4s and I hear there good off road but I really dont like the look of them and it looks like there not built to last. Anyways i found a 96 4 runner 4x4 in great condition with 150,000 miles.. its at a dealer and hes asking 4900.. If I can get it for 4000 do you think it would be worth it?
