Temporary shudder and loss of power during shifting

Hi again guys,

It's been a few years since I've had any issues at all, and now... I am not sure what is going on. Obviously hoping it's not the trans/torque converter.

I have taken it into a mechanic twice and no resolution yet. First time, he did a wheel balance but that wasn't it (that type of rough ride would not appear and disappear as this does).

'02 T4R 2WD Automatic, 177K miles

1. Main issue is a shudder/temporary loss of power, primarily when at highway speed (50mph, 65mph) and when the trans shifts. Shudder disappears after accelerating maybe 5 MPH/finishing the gear shift.
2. Mechanic checked bushings and says they are ok
3. This has been happening for a week, and there may be a very slight occasional slip when starting out in 1st gear.
4. Trans fluid is clear
5. Check Engine light as well as VSC and TRAC lights had been on for several months prior. Mechanic cleared them and said they were catalytic related. They have not come back on, though on one occasion the CE light did blink on and off for 30 seconds at highway speed.

A lot of people have mistaken highway/high speed shudder as a transmission issue. When in fact it was a misfire from bad plugs or wires.

The CEL flashing is usually a sign of a misfire. I recommend getting a cheap ODB2 bluetooth adapter and using an android/apple app to read your codes. Then post the CEL codes.

If the plugs and wires have not been done for a very long time I would do them with NGK wires and the correct dual electrode plugs. If non dual electrode plugs used that could also be the issue.

I've had the car since '11 and have not done them (105k at that time). No idea if the previous owner did them but if they were part of the regular Toyota tune-ups program they probably were.

I have purchased an ODB2 adapter on your recommendation and will post the codes when I read them (probably around 9/27/16 as I'll be away from the truck til then).

I recently had this issue with my manual. Was 100% sure it was my clutch/tranny maybe going out. Had one of my mechanics look at it. Ended up being a bad fuel injector.
