Terrible gas mileage 4banger

Took a trip out to the desert this past weekend, all highway, didnt have to work the motor too hard besides a few moderate Socal grades. I have a 3RZ 4runner lifted on 32s, auto trans. On the flats I was maintaining 75 mph at around 2500 rpms. When I got to the gas station I was surprised to discover that I only got 15 mpg!! Anyone with a 4banger on big tires getting similar gas mileage? I feel like I should be getting 20+ on the freeway

You're getting the same mileage as me, I'm on 35's with a whole lot of extra weight and wind resistance. You should be getting 18 at the very least on the freeway. I'd start with a tune up if you haven't done one. Plugs, wires, front O2 sensor and clean the MAF.

I was at 18.5 before 33's & 16.5 after. I added a CAI & cleaned the MAF & TB & now I'm at 17.5.

I'd bet that you could get 20MPG with no hills, no wind, no air conditioning, and going 55MPH.
Put on stock tires, you might hit 24MPG or more....at 55MPH.
The EPA MPG was about 1 or 2 MPG better with the 3RZ than the 5VZ.

Stock I'd be at 23-24 regularly. the EPA underestimated a little on the 3RZ. I tracked 10 tanks and averaged a hair over 22. 20MPG with bigger tires is unlikely, but I have hit 18 all freeway how she sits now, so it's somewhat feasible.

I constantly get 21-22 mpg with 235/75/15 tires. My engine is stock except for the OEM mini header. My driving is 75% highway, 25% highway.

Make sure you're account for odometer offset if you're running different size tires than stock. Going to larger tires will artificially reduce your mileage because your odometer will be reading low.

The best stock tank I had in my 3rz was 23MPG ( could get 24/25 all highway). Built it up to 255s, 5.29 gears, and armor. After all that I could pull right at 21MPG on all highway. I should also say, I rarely pass 70mph. All numbers are taken from a scangauge.

I've found with the v6 bigger tires and high speeds don't mix. I've gotten 19+MPG highway at 65mph. 75mph and above I get 15-17mpg.

It's almost impossible to get good gas mileage readings when there are so many variables.
