Test Drove 5-th gen today.

No, its not about turbos. Its about VVTi, which, like turbos, creates more power. Exact same truck, same engine BUT one produces more power. Its just clear who the winner will be.

you make it sound as if VVTI is some sort of turbo. it's not. it's hardly detectable. the diff between the v6 and v8 is way more noticeable. VVTI isn't even toyota's version of adding power. it's VVTLI.

look dude, there's nominal real life diff in real life between these two v8s.

sorry. that's just how it is.

as an aside, test drove an '08 escalade ext today. nice. listed at $43K. dealer wouldn't take my offer of $39K so walked out. 4runner was almost a goner. :D anyone wanna buy mine?

WOW...almost 40K for a 5th gen and no V8...I'll keep my '03 and spend those hundres and hundres of $$$'s a month on something else...

Actually the VVTi makes the upper RPM range of the V8 far more usable.

Drive one and see for yourself.

This is an easy comparison in the 4runner. Everything about the vehicles is identical except for vvti.

The difference in feel between the two engines would depend on time spent above 3500 rpms. The farther away from 35k, the greater the difference. In the high 4s, where non-vvti HP would be starting to fall off with the engine approaching red line, but vvti HP still climbing with a now large HP gap and still more room to spin, the difference would feel quite large. After the non-vvti forced upshift, which vvti wouldn't have to make, the difference could seem dramatic, which is not too strong a word if it takes place while passing a big rig on a two lane highway.

As for 0-60, that's a particularly unfair test for the non-vvti. 0-50 would be closer as both engines could get by with one shift. To get to 60mph, non-vvti needs two.

i don't doubt that the vvti helps to make more power, but in real life terms, it's not going to make a diff whether you decide to pass that rig or not because the gains are NOMINAL when measured in will I hit the other car or will I not?

if you're cutting it that close anyways, you're a douchebag for putting yourself and others in danger.

i'd be more for vvti if it actually resulted in greater efficiency as in it gets me V8 power with v6 consumption, but alas it does not.

i know and others should know that this is a complete hair splittage type discussion. i'm just saying don't get your panties in a wad when you see the non-vvti v8 or even that v6 keeping up side by side if ever you guys run a drag race.

Most of the time in most situations, little difference. There are, however, circumstances where the difference is pretty big especially when two separate gears are involved. A difference of a few hundred lbs of torque at the wheels is not insignificant.

I stoplight raced my buddy who has the same year, same mileage, same model, only real diff is V6 to V8. Over several lights, I took him every time. I can't talk to the V8 vs V8 though.

These days I have bigger tires and a lift. He's stock, I'm running 255 75R17s. I still have him, but only by a hair.

The real difference that is most important to me between my VVTI and a non VVTI is the cover that is on the top of my engine. :reddance: :reddance: :reddance:
