So i was chillin watchin some tv earlier today when Mario Andretti came across the TV saying check your tire pressure, so i thought that i would give it a try, I recently had noticed that my car was running oddly and that when i was braking my car would "shiver" or "rattle" So i went to go check my tires and to my astonishment my rear driver side tire had 10 PSI in it i thought that i was doing something wrong or that the gauge was busted so i called my dad out to look at it, he checked it came out to be 10 PSI again i was at that point disapointed in my self so i checked the others and they were around 25 PSI so i ran to the citgo by my house and filled them to about 31 PSI and now i can tell so much of a difference in the ride it is smoother and just a better feel on the road. So check yours o yeah by the way i agree that i am retarted for letting them go so low and does anyone know what could have caused it to go low???:bash:

Thanks a lot

Rubber is a porous material, so air will slowly leak out of over time. It's a good idea to check your tire pressure once a month.

Couldn't you tell when your tire started to sag at the bottom? Or do you not visually check them much? At least you noticed it before anything bad happened.

Extreme cold or other temp changes will also affect your tire pressure. Here in the winter you usually need to top off the tires.

Kind of on this topic...

Over the past few months while doing some research leading up to the purchase of my Runner I remember reading some information that seemed to suggest that some of these "tire pressure monitoring systems" are more annoying than helpful...

What has been your guys' experience with the one in the 4Runner...does it work well? Or is it a pain in the butt?

Cheers

Generally, I think the TPMS is a great idea. It was added to the 4Runner in 2004. The two biggest drawbacks are probably that the 4Runner's version of the system doesn't let you adjust the warning level (27 PSI), and that it can make changing out the rims an expensive process or at least a hassle. The computer is constantly looking for all 5 sensors (the spare has one, too), and if you don't have them installed for some reason, such as winter tires/wheels or aftermarket wheels that don't support the sensors, then the light is on all the time and doesn't mean anything. Even if you buy OEM rims for use as winter wheels, you need to have a dealer re-program the computer every time you swap wheels that have different sensors, as the computer is checking the serial numbers/ID's on the sensors.

I'm sure as time goes on we'll see more and more posts about the batteries dying in the sensors. They're engineered for a 5-year life, but the sensors are disposable at that point - you can't change the battery without destroying the sensor. At $100-$150 a sensor, that's a very expensive set of batteries.

Fill your tires with Nitrogen, your tires won't loose pressure as fast compared to filling with normal compressed air.

Also, I think for the majority of people the TPMS is a good thing. Most people don't keep tabs on their tires and the TPMS is a good reminder.

If memory serves me correctly, TPMS was added mid-2003/2004 so we'll see in 2009 if the sensors start going bad...

It would also be nice if the TPMS told you which wheel was low. Some cars already do that...

It is typical for pressure to drop approx. 1 psi per month and 1 psi for each 8-degree loss in ambient temperature.

Yep. I have nitrogen in my tires and I have lost MAYBE 1 pound over about 6 months. I swear by it.

I just use regular air and just check my tires every month plus I air up and down when off road during the warmer months so not an issue here. I lose maybe a pound every few months during the winter but nothing major.
