I haven't been on the forum for a while, but had reason to be over the past two weeks. I own a 2006 4R Ltd with 4.7 V8 at about 96K miles. I just encountered my 1st CEL, with the TRAC lights lit, but no ABS lit.

I got on here and found a few posts about CELs and DTC codes, one of which caught my eye. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it...

Leaving the gas cap off??? Seriously???:wow2: :shrug::ybrick::wtf::bash:​

On a whim, I went and checked it, and sure enough the gas cap was lose! WOW! So, I put it back on, but of course, that didn't clear the code by itself. I have invested in an Actron CP5980A code scaner with ABS scanning, etc. I figured, I'm hoping to keep my 4R for a bit, so I may as well invest in keeping it running. The scanner arrived tonight, and I got the software updated.

Went down to the vehicle, and thought I had found the ODBII plug, but it didn't look right. There was a white terminal to the right of the parking break pedal, but the plug wasn't the same as the std. ODBII plug. I looked around some more, and finally found the ODBII plug stuck up near the top left side, with a cover on it. Great! Plugged it in, and sure enough there were 10 codes stored. One ABS code (which didn't seem to cause the lights to come on), but all the other codes stored were EVAP related. I cleared them all, and restarted the engine and let it run. SUCCESS!

:bravo: 4R Forum! I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow to make sure the codes stay cleared, and let you know. But thanks so much. Y'all may have saved me a ton of money and a trip to the dealer!

BTW, quick question... Assuming "standard" usage (if there is such a thing), how long should things like O2 sensors last?

In my experience O2 sensors will last anywhere from 25k miles to 250k miles...

Also is nice when the CEL is an easy fix is it not?!?!

I had the same issue, but had to replace my gas cap. Don't be surprised if the light comes back on.

Update: I took the car out for a couple of 10 mile runs this morning, all still clear... No codes! I took another reading with the scanner. All the tests came up either N/A or OK, with (oddly enough) the only "inc" being the EVAP tests! I guess I need to take it out for a longer time for that. I'll take a much longer drive early next week and see.

A lot of EVAP tests done by the computer actually happen a few hours after the car has been sitting and shut off.

It is my understanding that if the cel light comes on for the gas cap being loose it will turn it self back off after driving a while with it tight again. I do not have first hand experience with this though.

Well, I took it out for a 2x25 mile round trip (mostly highway) this morning, and still all clear, but still "inc" on the EVAP tests. I wonder how long it will take to get a reading. Not a huge deal, but I will have to take it in for 100K mile maintenance, shortly. Definitely new break pads and transmission/transfer case service (i.e. replace fluid, etc.). I'm starting to hear a little break squeal in the Rt. Front if I press with any significant strength.

Another Update:

The codes have returned. :ybrick:

I had been driving just fine for the last 10 days or so. I fueled up 2 days ago, and when putting the gas cap back on, I did notice there was some "looseness" in the fit. I tried to ensure it was as tight as I could make it (i.e. with ratcheting, etc.). I drove around for a day or two (and about 100 miles or so), but the codes returned this morning. Exact same EVAP codes plus one ABS code (which I now think is the code it adds when it wants to turn on the TRAC lights etc... not that there's anything really wrong with ABS). I checked the cap. It was still on, but still loose. The EVAP test indicator still registers "inc" BTW.

So, it appears I may need a new gas cap, or whatever the sensor is that determines an EVAP condition and sets those codes. I'll try the gas cap first. I wonder though if it could also be the metal sleeve to the tank changing shape due to the cold weather (NY Metro area). I keep the vehicle garaged primarily, but it is not a heated garage.

I don't know if most people catch this or not, but one of the inspection items on the maintenance schedule is "fuel tank cap gasket" at 30K and 150K.

I replaced mine a while back even though I didn't have any issues. It looked great when I took the old one off. Could be something worth investigating that might save you a little scratch if it's the fix.

I replaced mine a while back even though I didn't have any issues. It looked great when I took the old one off. Could be something worth investigating that might save you a little scratch if it's the fix.

I will definitely take a look at that, but if the price of the gas cap itself is not much (hopefully, they are available "aftermarket"), it might be worth it just to replace it altogether than replace only the o-ring/gasket. I have my share of o-ring replacements on my SCUBA tanks/gear.

Final word: Indeed, it was the Gas Cap. There have been no codes registered since I replaced it. This, after several hundred miles and several fuelings.
