The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

1996 Supercharged

Hi, I am brand new to the forums. Spent several hours going through this thread but not quite sure if my supercharger is having an issue that a resolution was indicated. I apologize for my ignorance. Thank you for this great thread!

1996 supercharged Tacoma. The supercharger was installed by the previous owner, a Toyota technician. That was at 122,000 miles. The truck now has 206,000. Along the way I had checked with my local dealer and they told me the oil in the supercharger never needed replacing. So I never did.

The pulley is the smaller 2.1 (installed by the tech) but I am unsure if he did any fuel or injector upgrades. I live in Colorado at about 5,000 feet.

Issue: The truck has lost boost. It previously showed at 7.5 PSI, now it barely creeps over 1. Under acceleration it start to pick up the typical whine, then the pitch drops and boost goes away. I do notice when not accelerating, there is some new noise somewhere in the cabin, sounds like a whooshing air noise but do it even when fan is off. Under acceleration it goes away. Perhaps unrelated...

Has anyone experienced this? What other info can I check on the truck to help diagnose this? Is this a bypass valve? Do I need to replace the nose cone? Does the entire supercharger need a rebuild?

Once again, sorry if this is in the forum already, I was unable to find it through a variety of searches.

Thank you for ANY help you can provide.

Your bypass valve could have gone bad and is just hanging open. It works like a waste gate allowing excess boost pressure to escape once you lift your foot off the gas.

1. Smaller pulley at high elevations I'm told will work ok. I would guess you probably have the 7th injector installed as well.

2. Lost boost: seeing that you can audibly hear the supercharger slow down and lose rotation, I immediately think it's the belt. They stretch out over time. Toyota of Dallas' parts department has them at a decent price, others might also have them. Replacing the belts is a little bit of a chore though, it may be worth just taking it to a shop. Heck, might as well replace the A/C and Power Steering belts too since they have to come off.

3. Open up the drain plug on the front (assuming it's the black supercharger, not grey?) and take a whiff. If it smells like someone ground up a squirrel and left it to rot in there for 20 years (bad gear oil) then you need to change your oil. It should not be dark in color either if you can get a finger or q-tip in there to test the oil color.

Sup guys

Im finally about to install my sc i bought almost 6-8 months ago used. Just wondering if anybody had the 01-02 throttle by wire bracket laying around? I checked robs 1st post and noticed that the replacement kit comes with 3 and im not quite sure which one i need. if anyone has one laying around from their kit id love to take it off your hands! Ill post in the classifieds section too

I'll give you mine if you have the one for the auto tranny for an '00.

It should have two slots, one bent at ~35* and the other 90*... Pictures help too. Seriously though. I'd trade you straight up! I got my S/C off an '01 and had to make my own plate to attach to the 01 bracket as a temporary option. Works so far, but I'd love to have the right bracket as well.

sounds like the belt is slipping. i assume you have the static tensioner. that was my problem.

@shootmyime his belt could just be slipping due to oil or some other contaminants being on the belt. At least, this is what my problem was.

@1997supercharged the good news is...if it's just the belt like mine, it's only a $10-$12 fix :D

Good luck Sir!!

would it be a bad idea to have the exhaust exit too quickly and easily ? I'm planning on getting an exhaust cutout and running it right before the cat, which in return would be better then a high flow cat and cat back exhaust system correct? so in terms this would be the most free flowing exhaust but is there a downside to having it too free flowing and not having enough back pressure ? sorry if this seems like a dumb question

To little exhaust pressure and you will lose a lot of scavenging at low RPMs (like around town). I had this problem on my '87 4R w/ 22RE and had to rebuild the exhaust to get it back where it should have been.

Bracket measurements needed

This is everything that was included with my sc. Do you think I will need to buy any other parts other than:

Check valve ptr26-35042
Supercharger belt
Replacement throttle body gasket
Nose cone kit
Rear bearings
Catch can
17176-62040 air surge tank gasket
Wideband
Vacuum hoses
Cold plugs
Oil change kit

I just purchased a used SC and the bracket was lost. Can anyone tell me what thickness the tensioner bracket is (like pictured above) and exactly how long the spacers are which are welded on the back?

Having a hard time finding the bolts too.

Good luck finding bolts. And info on it. Might be better to go buy a new one

Thanks! I replaced the bypass valve and the connecting hose. That seems to have taken care of it. I did get an oil change kit and a new belt but have not changed/installed yet.

Anything special to note when installing the belt?

Not really. It's got the dynamic tensioner so you just slip the belt off with the tensioner compressed and then slip the new one back on. Easy peasy.

Only hard part is getting all the other belts off first to get to it.

I've got a quick question, right now i have 9lbs of boost at max with my 2.2 pulley with stock exhaust, i am thinking of headers and with that i will gain hp and torque while lowering boost(probably around 7?) , with this I'm thinking about going the 2.1 pulley, now wouldn't this put me at the same amount of boost psi since the headers will lower it but the smaller pulley will raise the boost lbs again(back to 9?) ? now they say only to run 93 octane minimum with this pulley, but wouldn't i be okay to still just run 91 since the boost lbs is the same ?

also in case anyone was looking fr headers Doug Thorley headers are 15% off at auto anything and can be had for $606 shipped to your door almost $100 cheaper then URD

I'm not sure that it lowers boost. Never heard about that, I haven't done much research about it ether. I've also been looking into the Trd headers myself.

You know there are some Trd ones floating around eBay and Tacoma world right now for sale.

I know headers help with scavenging exhaust gasses and help lower EGT. But not sure about actual boost.

Interesting.
