The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

What do you guys think of my plugs? I thought it may be running a bit lean but it looks quite similar to "normal" worn out plugs when I google images of plugs. This plug had the most white on the tip. The others were similar with more of a brownish tint.

These plugs are IK22s that went ~37,000 miles. Little longer than I wanted to go (typically change them at 30k).

Looks ok to me. The electrode is clean and the right "mocha" color, but the plug is a little sooty. Nothing terrible though. Might actually be running rich, if anything or you might be burning a tiny bit of oil.

Ok so I might have some intriguing information for any 1st gen SC owners, but I won't know till next week. I am testing out a new item which could help with rebuilds as the 1st gen is completely discontinued and hard to come by for spare parts.

Nice, now that I wouldn't need it anymore...

Please give us a bigger hint. I'm on the ass-end of my 1st gen rebuild and I'd hate to button it back up and reinstall it only to have missed your morsel of information.

:faint:

Ok since you said please and impatient...haha

This might not pertain to you, but can be beneficial to others with broken or damaged rotor packs. All 3.4 superchargers are M62 as with many other makes superchargers. So I did some research and found 1992-1995 Pontiac Bonnevilles have a supercharger which uses the gen 1, 2, and 3 M62 rotor packs. These superchargers are readily available and cheap, so in theory we should be able to use the rotor packs as a cheaper replacement or source of parts. Although they are reverse drive SC's so the snout is located on the drivers side of the SC and will require the removal and swapping of the gears (I've done this before with success). I have a used one coming this week and a parts TRD SC that I will try to test fit it on and eventually run on my 4runner. I don't believe the nose cone will work though, but maybe the shaft can be reused.

Nah, for the most part it was pretty wasted and I didn't want to deal with it.

Damn too bad. My 4runner is a salvage, but very superficial damage. If you were closer I would have tried to buy it back and part out. Glad you're safe though and I would LOVE a 5th gen.

Ok the supercharger arrived! I bought used as it was $220 shipped to my place, but you can find completely remanufactured ones for $700 all over the place ($500 + $200 core charge). I went used because this was an experiment and I didn't want to pay a $100+ restocking fee if it didn't work out. Also you should be able to find these any salvage yards all over the place as they aren't a highly sought after SC. Based on first impressions and review it looks like this will work perfectly. It is indeed a M62 and looks to be the right dimensions and an exact copy of the 1st gen SC. Also, even better news, the nose cone and drive direction of the Pontiac SC is the same as the TRD. That means you simply just pull the rotor pack and nose cone out of the Pontiac SC and place it right into the TRD SC. No other modifications needed.

I will be doing a full test fit this weekend and verify my findings, but this could be a very beneficial route for anyone with a 1st gen supercharger as nose cones are discontinued and rotor packs are only available rebuilt and expensive.

Details on the supercharger:
Pontiac Bonneville 1992-1995 (this is important as they switched to the M90 in 1996)

There may be other years/models of Buicks and Pontiacs that run this SC, but I'll have to do some research.

I *think* a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP will have the same engine+blower setup as a Bonneville. :thumb3:

*EDIT* - I'm wrong, see below.

How do i get the front nose cone seal off? Or what is the right way? Right now i have it in peices and it is stuck on there. Not fun :(

Black or gray?

Black one has some wings that you can tap with a flat head screw driver and it will start to pull apart. It's gently pressed in there by 2-3 short guides which hold it in place.

After you take all the screws out around the edge of course.

No idea about grey.

It is this one. This is an earlier picture. I now have most of the big pieces off but still a bunch stuck on the inside and on the outer lip. Im sure i am tring to remove this thing totally the wrong way. Feel like the only way to get everyrhing off is to burn it. Im about 5 min away from going NA.

Oh sorry I thought it was the nose cone. I missed the "seal"
Yeah it's a gentle pressed in. Drill a hole in it. Just a screw in the drilled hole and use vice grips or something and pull on the screw.

Use a seal puller.

Use a flat head screw driver and try to pull it out.

I rebuilt mine this summer. It was pretty easy.

Beyond all of that. Now i have stuff stuck everywhere. Will get a pic tomorrow. I have small scrapers that im using. Hopefully not damaging the seal surface.

It's seriously in there good. You'll need to drill a SHALLOW hole (don't drill the bearing behind it) and pull it out. Needlenose pliers did it for me, I literally had one foot on the bumper and was pulling with all of my might. Keep the charger on the vehicle though. Careful not to score the housing though...

P.S. that brown rubber isn't the seal. The aluminum thing behind it is.

So what is the metal behind my seal? Could it be the old OEM seal or is it part of the Supercharger housing? I bought this unit rebuilt so not sure how the person rebuilt the nose cone. Maybe he accidentally left the old seal in there?
