Hello guys I wanted to see if you guys know of any local shops in the OC area in Cali? I want to rebuild my engine completely and wanted to see if you guys know of any threads that might point me in the right direction

So I drove out there its about 1 hour away and then I was parked for a good 4 ish hours then after I went back out to leave and I tried to start my truck up and it cranked then tried to start and then sputtered and then just stopped. Tried a second time, same thing. 3rd time I had to give the gas pedal a little touch to convince it to start and then it started this time. Once it started it running as it normally would i didn't notice anything different or wrong. I thought I popped off a vaccum hose or something haha. I did notice that at a stop though the idling was acting kinda strange it was jumping up and down from high 400's to 600's for a little.

What do you guys think?

I'd suspect a dirty/sticky IAC (idle air controller). If that was stuck in the warm idle position, then it wouldn't allow the engine to start well at a cold(er) engine temp and would cause low/fluctuating idle for at least a while after startup.

Hmm okay interesting. When I did my valve cover gasket job around a year ago now i took the liberty to clean out my throttle body thoroughly as well as I unbolted the IAC from the throttle body and brake cleaned it and cleaned it to the best of my ability. I also cleaned the MAF. But if it's sticking that totally makes sense. It's kind of a weird issue. I was thinking maybe the MAF. What happens is it cranks then starts then just dies right away and does it over and over until it finally starts and then runs just fine. The fluctuating idle was just that one time the first time it happened when I was sitting at a light. If it really is the IAC that's gonna suck cause the only way to buy OEM is from toyota haha. unless I take my chances with a rock auto one. At first I was thinking it was the fuel pump but if it was it would run goofy and just crank and crank. So i don't think it's the fuel pump. So if I cleaned the IAC before would that eliminate the possibility of it sticking / giving me issues? I know it's an original part so at some point it's gotta be replaced. Thanks for your input as always.

Not necessarily. Sometimes "cleaning it" makes it worse, ask me how I know - SOLVED: High idle, increases with coolant temp - IAC?

got a first gen tundra

yes this is the 3rd gen 4r forum....but its all questions asked.

Picked up a 2002 tundra from a friend who has had it 15 years...so now my 3rd gen 4r does not have to work so hard. No more heavy hauling with my 3rd gen. And NO im not selling my 3rd gen.
any other 1st gen tundra owners here, and if so what is the best forum for them

Engine noise only on acceleration

Hi all,

I've been chasing this sound for months and it has been driving me crazy.
Here is a clip of the sound, I removed the center console/dash to get a clear sound for the video. At the end of the video you can hear me take my foot off the throttle and the sound completely stops.

Exhaust leak? 2002 4Runner 5VZ-FE. Took out center console to hear it better. Sound only under load - YouTube

I've searched nearly every forum/ YouTube video relating to this sound I and I can't seem to find anyone with the same sound/ issue. My issue I have is a raspy/rough sound upon accelerating only. No check engine light and no noticeable issues while driving, only the sound. The noise is not there when I am in park/neutral and rev the engine. My first thought was exhaust leak, I took it to my local shop, had 2 leaks fixed and the sound is the same. Since then I have replaced the following. Fuel Filter, MAF, O2 sensor, oil and filter and air filter (spark plugs have less than 10k mi with coil packs replaces at the same time). I have also ran a few tanks of gas with fuel injector cleaner and sea foam in the gas tank as well as seafoam in crank case and the upper engine spray. I have also ran a few tanks of 91 Octane so I know its not pinging or detonation. So far nothing I have done has affected the sound, however the truck does feel smoother and more responsive since I began this process.

At this point I'm leaning towards potential vacuum leak somewhere? Or possibly exhaust leak in the crossover pipe that the muffler shop missed? (I doubt this is the case as the muffler shop is reputable)
Any help would be greatly appreciated

sup guys, wanted see if i can get some help on rear springs. im currently running 891s stock but will be finishing out my build soon and i know i will need to upgrade. heres what ill be running; vidal bumper with dual swing outs with 35" spare, dual zone fridge with drawers on one side, and an ironman rtt that weighs probably 200lbs. i was looking at the 861 springs but its a bit too tall for my liking, is there anything in between 891 and 861? any input is appreciated.

Ignition switch/ECU questions

Hey'ya
I have a quick question about the ignition switch replacement (due to losing the only key I had). I have a 2000 4runner sr5 (door sticker says it was manufactured June 1999) it has the transponder chip in the key. I have been researching the ins and outs of this replacement and found out that I may have a model that the computer is not reprogrammable. Is there any way to find out for sure? Will a standard vin search tell me? where would I be able to do a non mechanic vin search? I just dont want to purchase unnecessary parts or not enough parts. I have already purchased 2 ignition cylinders without realizing that they are for the vehicles without the chip in it. Thanks in advance

2001 rear axle compatibility

Hey all, so I have been searching for a new passenger side rear axle shaft for my 2001 4runner w/ ABS and I have found a couple options but I want to make sure it will work. I find a bunch of mixed answers on whether you can use early year 3rd gen rear axles for an 01 so I want to triple check and see if anyone here can help me. I found one on ebay that says its for 96-02 4runners, I want to trust it but I would like to make sure I am getting the right thing. Can 01s use 2000 and earlier rear axle shafts with no mounting problems? Here is the link if anyone would like to take a look at the listing. Will this work for me? Thanks!

Wondering what y’all’s favorite best brands were for oil, transmission fluid and front/rear diff. Apologize if it’s posted elsewhere I’m new here

That said, 5w-30 in the engine is what I use year 'round. I use synthetic, but that's your own choice based on oil change interval, cost and whether or not you have leaks.

Interior B.C. here - also super hot and super cold. Anything 5w30 full synthetic should be great! nothing too complicated here, don't overthink it.

For diff fluid, 75w90 or 80w90, full synthetic if you can get it. GL-5 hypoid gear oil. Lucas is a great brand for it. I just did my rear diff/axle housing and it took about 2.5 quarts.

For trans fluid, I have only ever used Dextron 6 ATF. the manual calls for Dex 3 but it is pretty outdated now, just make sure the Dex 6 you buy says it is compatible with Dex 3. I think all Dex 6 meets/exceeds Dex 3 but it should say on the bottle. I have had my A/T Fluid Temp light come on during some FSR climbs into the alpine in the summer, but that is probably more due to my stock rad. If you are worried about overheating the transmission, look into a separate ATF cooler. lots of info on the site here.

I just swapped both my rear axle shafts in order to replace those pesky drum brake backing plates, which were rusted out on my rig. Easier to replace the whole shafts than it is to press the bearings and everything out.

I don't know of any specific year compatibility issues, but obviously the ABS gear needs to be there and check the diff gearing too. There were 4.10 and 4.30 diffs IIRC. See if you can find a local scrapper or partout from a vehicle that is as close as possible to your own rig - year, drivetrain, etc. Buying a one size fits all solution from Ebay would make me nervous too.

so..i kind of get attached to my rigs. my 3rd gen is one of the best rigs I have owned..im 70 and ive owned tons of cool cars. recently I bought a 2002 tundra to haul heavy stuff and take a load off the 3rd gen..to be a back up vehicle...ive spent the past few days getting the. tundra up to snuff, I still daily drive the 3rd gen...threw thick and thin...nud, snow, alaska
today when I got home,,,i petted the dash board and said,,,dont worry baby,,,your still my girl....guess im kind of sick

2001 limited question

hey guys,

looking to buy a 2001 Limited T4R, it comes with leather seats, sunroof, etc. Looks pretty decent, I just have one concern:

It's listed as limited but has SR5 and 4WD emblems. Is this normal? New to this, sorry if it's a stupid question.

My concern is, the seller might be listing it more expensive as a Limited, when it's an SR5 that was bought with leather package.

How can I tell the difference?

Wide fender flares that are connected/integrated into cladding on the doors. Full auto climate control.

Leather and sunroof were fairly regularly optioned on the SR5 trim, so that's not a clue.

If it's legible sticker on B pillar tells what it is, to the right of VIN is the code.
VZN185L is frame code. GKPZKA is the characteristic code for Limited.
GKPGKA or GKPSKA is code for SR5 base or SR5 Sport.
You can go to japan-parts.eu put in VIN tells exactly what you're looking at.
