Howdy everyone,
Just want some opinions on what I should do with my surf. All my LCA bushings are shot. Is it worth replacing all the bushing or should I spend some extra money and upgrade to some nicer ones.

Thanks

Nicer whats - bushings or arms?

It is ALWAYS worth replacing fried bushings.

OEM replacement rubber will work great and perform as Toyota intended.
Front A arms can benefit from poly if trying for max wheel travel
without sacrificing too much ride quality. Whiteline is the way to go.

Rear control arms don't seem to respond as well to poly as the
flex/twist the axle exhibits tends to wallow out the sleeve hole.
But anything is better than whatever condition the originals are in.

Engine Swap Question

Hey all,

Has anyone ever heard of anyone swapping a BMW M57D motor into one of our T4Rs?

Ive heard of tdi swaps and the v8 swaps. And dont get me wrong i know with enough time and money anything is possible. Just wondering if anyones done it in a t4r. The hp/torque numbers from the straight6 inline diesel are pretty desirable to me considering you get supercharged 5vz power from a naturally aspirated motor with loads of torque.

Ive seen people throw them into the 100 series land cruisers but i know thats an overall bigger canvas to work with when it comes to the engine compartment.

Anyone ever seen it done or have any immediate road blocks that wouldnt make it a good idea?

Life Expectancy

So my 2001 is sitting around 270k miles and I'm contemplating if I want to keep investing money into it based on it's life expectancy

The hydraulic master cylinder seems to have gone on it and will need to be replaced which will be roughly $1500-2000, and the rear seals and VCG need to be addressed as well. I've put a lot of new OEM parts into it when the originals have failed as well as a rebuilt transmission.

I had an oil analysis done and everything looked flawless but am thinking about having a shop run a compression/leak down test on the motor to see where it's health is at as it has had one overheat since I have owned it.
The frame is still good as well as the body, but the paint on the front fenders has seen better days.

What would you do in my situation?
Keep and continue to do maintenance on it? Sell?
Or fix the issues now and start saving up for a new vehicle?

Very much in the same situation...
'98 with 270K daily driven, but also my wheeler.

I have committed to keeping it alive until it isn't possible for me.
That would require illness or some other catastrophe.
I've got the tools, the (relative) skill, and the means to maintain
and put some other higher zoot goodies into it.

Given the world's boner for anything remotely old & cool,
I don't feel like starting over with another vehicle that will
cost way more than it's worth just to do the same thing.

Will it be my daily forever? Realistically - no. I will end up biasing
it toward offroad ability, but I have no plans or desire to sell it.
So a lil commuter of some sort is likely on the horizon sometime.

It brings me joy to create my own version of a 3rd Gen.
Will it be frustrating? Occasionally.
Will it be expensive? Probably.
Will it be worth it? Absolutely.

Never heard of it. See what is involved in putting an I6 motor in the engine bay of a 4Runner by looking at 2JZ swaps - and those fit with the same(-ish) transmission as a stock 4Runner.

Oh, and that engine isn't naturally aspirated - they are all turbo or twin turbo. I'm not sure why you wouldn't do a supercharged 5VZ instead of a BMW motor - the SC 5VZ would likely still be more reliable, with no turbo lag, wider rev range, etc. Do you really want to be out on the trails with a modified BMW engine under the hood?

UBJ Fiasco

I’ve been lurking this forum awhile now and I want to thank so many of you for How-To and Write-Ups. You guys are quite entertaining. I didn’t realize I had to make a few posts before I can start my own thread as we are restoring a 99 and about to do a frame swap off a 96 I picked up for $600 (jumped timing guy sold it as is) I’m getting off topic…

We beefed up our suspension system and in doing so came these cool, red, aftermarket UCAs. When they arrived the UBJs were already installed. Cool. Everything was cool UNTILLLLLL I decided I wanted different UBJs. Like many of us, I cut the stud and pressed out the old ones and threw them away before measuring them. Why make life simple by measuring? I also blindly ordered new ones that I went to press in and they just dropped in NO PRESS NEEDED. I’m getting to the point I promise.

I’m trying to find oversized UBJ with a 1.75” OD on the housing. I was going to try Ford but haven’t found any under 2.2” on the housing. Couldn’t find anything with MOOG and not really a fan of them anyways. But do any of y’all have any ideas?

My husband and I thank y’all very much!

The manufacturer of the aftermarket UCAs can sell you UBJs engineered to fit their UCAs. What brand UCA? JBA?

Rs3000 help

I have a 97 4runner with the RS3000 in it and no key fab. I have looked all over for a key fab that would work with no luck. So Is there a way to simply disable the RS3000 permanently?

New Koyo Wheel Bearing

I'm about to change out the front wheel bearings on my '96 4WD, but one of the two new bearings I purchased (both Koyo brand) has white grease all over one side of it. The other one is clean. Should I be ordering another replacement, or will this one be ok?

Each connector replaces an original connector that will be tucked aside in the truck. There are some vampire taps to remove too. Theoretically removing the connector belonging to the RS3000 and plugging the originals back in would do the trick. IIRC there is one connector you may have to remove/unpin a wire.

I added an RS3000 by removing one out of a junkyard truck and sticking it in mine. Maybe some of those pics would help you understand how to undo one? Starts post #3860

I found the oval fobs on Amazon some time ago for pretty cheap. Every rare once in awhile I find them in similar year Camrys at the junkyard.

2000 4runner Limited 3.4

Did timing belt as it has 283000 and it was last done at 90000.
So did the kit with all new pulleys and water pump.
Has new:
Fuel pump and assembly
Fuel Filter
Fuel Injectors

Did timing and the car was running fine, after a few days it died on the way home like it ran out of fuel and so that started the process of all the new fuel parts as the engine was not getting fuel.

Changed all the physical fuel parts, i am getting fuel to the rail as i have taken the line off and cranked the engine, fuel shoots out. When i did the injectors i even used air compressor in rail line to make sure there was no physical blockage and air was coming out of all 6 spots.

It will crank but not start, will run just fine if im feeding starter fluid from intake.

Have checked all relays and fuses, I am tired of throwing parts at the problem and coming here for help. I see in my research on here there have been a lot of the same issues with the solution from Key to ECU to fuel pump. None of them are currently making sense from the issue i am having(stock key) So i come here for help and guidance as i want to get it back up and running

Hello all, new member here looking for some info on an engine swap.
Just picked up a 96 with a 3.4 auto transmission in it
I want to swap the engine into a 3.0 with manual transmission.

Can I use the 3.4 auto ECU when I have the manual transmission? Or do I need to pick up an ECU particularly for 3.4 manual transmission?

Thanks for the help

You can start it with the auto ECU, but it will have plenty of OBD-II error codes. You will need a manual ECU to get rid of the transmission-related errors.

Help!

I’ve been fighting my 3rd gen for weeks now, started off as a misfire, replaced my coil wires and fixed the misfire but, have been fighting a p0100 code for two weeks. It had a crappy aftermarket intake but now is replaced with an oem intake. I’ve replaced both intake manifold gaskets with oem gaskets. But still the p0100 code is showing up. The car starts but cannot idle and instantly stalls. Thanks

Thanks for the info! do you know if there is a way to get rid of those cods without swapping the ECU. I have seen some things about shorting some wires or resisters or such but have not found any concrete info on what exactly to do.

Any info would be much appreciated.
