The 4th gen clunk when braking and starting

2006 V8 ltd. I Have read about this issue. Clunk when you come to a stop and when you accelerate from a stop. Everyone says it's the drive shaft that needs to be greased. I have done it and had the dealer do it to all 6 zerks. It went away for a few miles then right back to clunking. I had the dealer examine the drive shaft, slip joints and they say no issues.

Any ideas?

I just saw a post a couple weeks ago that mentioned taking it apart, cleaning out all the old junk and adding new. The post specified a particular grease that worked really well.

I dug around and found the thread I was talking about. - For those with the rear driveline clunk...

Yeah either go back to the dealer and say put more grease in or just load it up yourself. You can see it start to push the driveshaft as it fills up.

Bonus, the extra that might spatter out is rust protection

If it's gone a long time without lubrication, it's gonna take a few treatments until it lasts a full oil change between the times when it gets clunky.

When I first got mine, I don't think it had been done in 40,000 miles. I greased it, then like 200 miles later I had to grease it again, then maybe 1000 miles, then another thousand, and so on...

Grease those zerks! I have a printout of what grease and where it goes along the drive shaft. I do it once a year and I haven't had the clunk come back.

For me one of the rear caliper bolts came out. When I would start to accelerate the caliper would roll back, and with stopping it would roll forward

Or you can get the updated driveshaft. There was a TSB that started with Lexus and finally came over to toyota. I did mine about 8 years ago and has not done it since. I grease it every oil change.

Ditto! That's what my dealership did years ago - got a shaft from the Lexus version. Problem greatly solved, but still have to grease occasionally.

Of course, that was still back when it was under a 100k extended warranty . . .
