The 4WD V6 and V8 have identical 4WD systems, except the V6 has the ability to be in 2WD. The V6 can be driven in 4WD (4H, center diff unlocked) all day long and on any surface.

The way it was explained to me is full time 4WD differs from AWD is 4WD has low range gearing, AWD does not.

The underlined circles are safe and are the default 4WD settings unless you take the additional step of locking the center diff, the use of which requires care on pavement.

The fourth gen 4Runner has a Torsen center diff, just like the 5th Gen Limited. So it is safe to be in H4 on dry roads, as the center diff (as long as it is unlocked) allows the front and rear driveshafts to turn at different speeds.

In contrast, the 5th Gen SR5 and TE have a part-time 4WD system, and when you put those in 4Hi, the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speeds, which is why you should not run those trucks in 4Hi on dry pavement.
