The answer is about 500 yards.

Been down that road...

This happened with my wife's 4Runner.

They tried to offer me a salvage motor. I noted everything I was told from everyone, including summarizing their statements after we met and making clear to them it was being dated and documented. They refused to put the offer of the salvage motor in writing. They bragged to me they fired the tech on the spot and I told them that wasn't my problem - my problem is how they were going to ameliorate the utility and financial value they robbed from my family.

They ended up buying the truck back at well, well above blue book value, making us a SUPER deal on a brand new (at the time) one, and now my rep personally books my service (on both our 4Runners) and I receive special pricing for as long as I am a customer there on all service.

I wouldn't want a dealer installing a motor in my 4Runner. Very different from factory conditions and precision, no matter how good they say they are.

Talk to an attorney and figure out your state's tort laws around this behavior. I also found talking to Toyota America helpful because they let the dealership know they were watching.

Sorry you have the displeasure of dealing with this.

this same thing happened to a friend who went to walmart to get an oil change in his older z71. He was about a mile from the store when his engine went south. He discovered they did in fact add oil, but did not replace the drain plug....

after about a year of arguing they bought him a 350 crate motor

Hope you get a new ride out of it for sure!!

I would make arrangements for a new vehicle. Get the dealership to buy it back above blue book and dive you a new one at a really good deal where you hopefully don't have any out of pocket expense.

Say they do give a new engine and a 100k warranty...do you really want the hassle of taking it in to the shop for subsequent repairs?

Let the dealership try to fix, sell and warranty their mess up to someone else. I, personally, wouldn't want the "what if's" looming over my head in regards to future problems as a result of dropping in a new engine.

Firing the mechanic is wrong. Everyone makes mistakes. Yes if his history dictates it fine but for a first mistake, I dont think so. I have seen many of these big screwups in my years and never once saw a tech fired. Good luck, get a new truck.

-it's a simple task you could teach a child to do
-carelessness with vehicles can lead to injury or death

What if his 4Runner had shit the bed in the middle of an intersection or on an onramp and he had been in an accident?

Agreed. If it had happened to me I'd find it hard to not go up there and crack some skulls

They had one ****ing job to do....

I want to report that Lee Odin(GM) and Toyota of Lewisville, TX gets an A+ for customer service. Yes their lube tech screwed up but they stepped up to the plate and made everything right in my book. They are replacing my 2015 Black TRD with a 2016 Magnetic Gray Metallic TRD. They did try to sell me on an engine replacement and talked depreciation because I had off-road racing stripes from my off-road adventures. I held firm and they came around and we agreed on an even swap. I will give them nothing but praise for doing the right thing.

Good. I was going to suggest that EVERYONE on this thread call their service department and let them know of this story. Minus any specific names of course. Bad publicity across the country ... not so good.

Glad everything worked out for you.

Did they offer you free lifetime oil changes with the new truck? :jump:
sorry... I had to...

Glad to see this was resolved. Can't go wrong with Mag Gray! Be sure to find the Mag Gray thread when you get your hands on it.

Great customer service. I'm glad everything worked out. Curious what they're doing for you in the interim.

I like how everyone screamed run to get your lawyer before giving the dealer a chance to make it right. Everyone is so damn sue happy around here. Until it comes to Gobi that is...

Anyway, :focus:

On another note,

I just got a great deal on a 2015 Black TRD Pro with about 10,000 miles on the clock for a song!!! Downside I have to fly to Texas to pick it up, but the dealer said they're polishing it up and doing a quick oil change for me!

Pretty stoked!

:wink2:

You don't just need a lawyer to sue.

They understand contract law better than most people and can explain what it means and what you're in for.

Anything you sign, whether you understand the language or not, you're responsible for.

In the case of the ignorant destruction of a 40,000 dollar piece of property you'd be stupid not to shell out 300-500 dollars for an attorney to explain what your rights are and what people and or a corporate entity are doing to you in their attempt to rectify it.

100% agree. I just love how everyone is a lawyer these days and many people become a different person behind a keyboard.

Regardless, glad everything worked out. Hopefully the deal is in writing and the OP can get it reviewed by a lawyer. :hatsoff:
