You seem to be trying hard to miss the real point. It isn't about the people. They are actually largely removed from the equation here.

Much of the engine production and installation is, in fact, automated, and performed with machinery and computer controls built for the expressed purpose of their manufacture and installation in a highly controlled environment. Echoing what the previous poster said about factory paint; professional body shop personnel won't pull your leg saying they can get factory results, and neither should professional mechanics in repair shops. Not even at the dealers. Because they can't.

1. An engine shop can rebuild a Toyota engine, a Boss 302, or even a Ferrari engine. There's a machine shop near me that does motor rebuilds on $1 million Ferraris, by hand, no robots.
2. I know guys that (if they had a body in white like the factory gets) could outspray whatever a Toyota robot puts on. Its easy to spray a body, the real work comes in wet sanding and buffing the paint smooth--something no robot can do. The factory does not have time for this unless you want a Bentley or something.

Get over it, your 4RnR is nothing special.

Ferrari motors are largely handmade, so that's not a parallel.

The thing about paint durability is the chemical bonding.

No one has alleged their 4Runner is unduly special (you keep going there, and are misguided) it's that they are being asked to accept a product that can not be as good as what they bought, considering all the production variables involved.
