The Driveshaft Clunk - what type of grease?

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a particular brand and/or type of grease to use on the driveshaft and u-joints? It seems like every time I squirt some grease into the zerk fittings the clunking goes away but only for a short while and within 1,000 miles it's back again. I'm wondering if I'm not using the correct type of grease (or if it even matters). Can't remember the stuff I bought other than I got it at O'Reilly Auto and it said it was recommended for use with this type of application.

The driveshaft clunk is the one thing on my truck that isn't pretty much operationally flawless - and it's really annoying every time I come to a stop or accelerate from a stop :redbrick:

Thanks!

EDIT 12/2/2015: "Green Grease" appears to do the trick. The clunks have been gone from my truck for some time. I was able to buy this stuff off the shelf at my local Autozone.

I know that working on concrete pump trucks(Macks) we would use red grease. it was sticky but would hold up longer and not melt away. the black(grey) grease was slung all underneath the vehicle or turn into liquid faster when hot.

Not to thread jack, but does anyone ever have trouble getting the grease to get into the zerk? Sometimes it goes without issue, and you hear the pop and see the new grease. Other times, you keep pumping and it just comes out all around the zerk.

Times two on the "red grease", Mobil 1 75w-90 is red (almost hot pink), full synthetic grease.

I've had good luck with Royal Purple 01312 syn grease on just about everything especially my dual axle Basscat trailer and now my 4R.

Could be a couple different things. The grease gun coupler (part that slips on the zerk) could be worn or loose. If it doesn't snugly clamp on, it may not be making a tight enough seal against the zerk.

OR, the little ball bearing in the end of the zerk fitting might be gummed up. try a little pick to get it to move freely. It may be gunked up (can give it a little shot of WD40 or something and wipe it off).

i tried greasing but that didn't work for me. i eventually bought and installed a lexus drive shaft and no more "clunk". hope that helps

would it be fine to use marine grease? i have green grease in my gun right now so i would rather use that then buy something else

In most cases, yes. There are only a few differences between marine vs regular greases. The marine grease I use on the boat has a few corrosion inhibitors, but is still a high temp, high pressure synthetic grease with some moly.

i will give it a try then

You think its possible to empty the driveshaft grease and start clean since the u joints self cycle as you apply more grease the push out the old
