The Effects of Pot

In my MEDICAL opinion as a health care provider, I fell that it's pretty harmless stuff. I have worked in correctional care "jail nurse" for the last 5 years and I can assure everyone that there are much worse things you can do to your body than put a little THC in it. Just sayn' I've never seen anyone die of a pot overdose. I have seen more than one person seize out from ETOH withdrawals aspirate and die.

Now the funny ones to watch withdrawal are the meth heads.:sleepy:

thousands of years of pot medical use without bad side effects or any fatalities vs todays doctors making money off what they prescribe with horrific side effects, many of which we dont know the long term effects.

In all my years of using the herb I've learned a few things about it . Depending on the type of, it can knock you out or perk you up ! Being how I had to bust my son recently I saw how at an age where they really can't understand the process & how it kills your drive to do anything . I believe it depends on the individual that being said I now can get by with a one hitter , but some guys smoke a whole J by themselves & their as high as me on one hit . I definitely saw my son suffer & he had no clue he was & he's a jock but he was for sure losing his drive . Some people just can't do anything or they go off the rail . It's case by case ! IMO

I totally agree with you!

But I think your one-hitter is killing your punctuation....lol

This type of "medical" opinion reminds me of that nurse (from Ebola thread) who claimed that oral temperature was the definitive answer to measuring core temperature.

Or those in the medical field who think that Testosterone is safe and beneficial... :(

How Heavy Marijuana Use May Hurt the Developing Brain: An Animal Study

Joel Yager, MD reviewing Verrico CD et al. Am J Psychiatry 2014 Feb 28. Corcoran C. Am J Psychiatry 2014 Feb 28.

- See more at: How Heavy Marijuana Use May Hurt the Developing Brain: An Animal Study - NEJM Journal Watch

With legalization of recreational marijuana use accomplished in two states and likely in many more, concerns about how it may affect youth are becoming more prominent than ever. To examine cognitive issues, investigators intravenously administered vehicle or Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at a dose equivalent to one or two marijuana cigarettes 5 days per week for 6 months to seven matched pairs of male adolescent rhesus monkeys.

The monkeys were repeatedly assessed for spatial memory (i.e., recalling the quadrant of a computer touch screen in which a square appeared) and object memory (i.e., recalling the color and shape of an object presented on the screen). With THC, improvement in accuracy (expected because of age and practice effects) was impaired both acutely and chronically on the spatial working memory task, with neither tolerance nor increased sensitivity to the marijuana effects seen over time. Object memory was not affected.
------------------------------------------------------
In rodent research, THC has been shown to decrease developmental neuroplasticity through glutamatergic pathways. The present study clearly demonstrates acute and persistent effects of chronic marijuana use on developing brains in adolescent monkeys — findings that are consistent with reports of a decline in IQ among human teenagers who persistently smoke marijuana. An editorialist notes that IQ declines might be reversible in even heavy marijuana users who stop early enough in their teens. However, a recent large cohort study from childhood to middle adulthood showed declines in adult IQ with persistent marijuana use that did not reverse with cessation of marijuana, especially if heavy marijuana use began in adolescence (NEJM JW Psychiatry Sep 17 2012). Clinicians, public health officials, and users: Be advised.

Smoking Marijuana During Pregnancy

Martin T. Stein, MD reviewing Goldschmidt L et al. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 2008 Mar.

Heavy prenatal marijuana exposure was associated with lower intelligence scores at age 6 years.

Prenatal marijuana exposure targets cannabinoid receptors in the brain, disrupting central nervous system cellular migration, differentiation, and synapse communication. In rodents, exposure to marijuana during gestation impairs fetal brain development, leading to adverse effects on behavior and cognition. However, results from studies in humans have been inconsistent.

To determine the effect of prenatal marijuana exposure on children’s intellectual development at age 6 years, researchers interviewed 648 low-income pregnant women from a single prenatal clinic at 4 and 7 months of pregnancy and at delivery and assessed their children’s intellectual development at age 6 years with the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (SBIS). The researchers were blinded to exposure status.

Nearly half (44%) the women reported marijuana use during pregnancy. In analyses controlling for social/environmental factors and prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco, and cocaine, prenatal marijuana exposure accounted for a small but significant portion of variation in SBIS composite scores. Maternal cognitive ability accounted for a significant portion of variability in the score. Compared with less use and no use, heavy marijuana use (1 or more cigarettes per day) during the first trimester was associated with significantly lower verbal reasoning scores in children at age 6. Heavy use during the second trimester was associated with significantly lower short-term memory and quantitative reasoning scores. Heavy use during the third trimester was associated with significantly lower quantitative reasoning scores.

Persistent Adolescent-Onset Cannabis Use, Persistent Cognitive Decline

Barbara Geller, MD reviewing Meier MH et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2012 Aug 27.

- See more at: Persistent Adolescent-Onset Cannabis Use, Persistent Cognitive Decline - NEJM Journal Watch

Deficits were found across multiple cognitive domains.

To examine the relationship between adolescent- or adult-onset persistent cannabis use and cognitive changes, investigators analyzed prospective data on the 1037 participants in the longitudinal Dunedin Study. The data included interviews at ages 18, 21, 26, 32, and 38; IQ testing in childhood (biannually at ages 7–13) and at age 38; and neuropsychological tests at age 38. Only seven participants reported any cannabis use by age 13.

Compared with adult-onset persistent users, adolescent-onset persistent users with at least three cannabis dependence diagnoses had an average 8-point decline in IQ by age 38. Regardless of dependence diagnoses, adolescent-onset users showed statistically significant impairments across multiple domains of cognitive functioning. Informants, who were chosen by the participants, reported decrements in attention and memory functioning at age 38 among those who began using cannabis in adolescence. Results remained significant when controlled for alcohol, tobacco, and hard drug intake; cannabis use at the time of testing; and schizophrenia diagnoses. Earlier and more-intensive use was associated with greater cognitive impairment. Among adolescent-onset users who had stopped use 1 year before testing, neuropsychological outcomes did not fully improve.

I did a search for Glacoma, because my Eye Doctor says it is in my future. Has hoping there was something about it in this thread.

And what is your medical background?

Also please stop copying and pasting stuff you found on the internet to make it look like you are educated in the subject.:noidea:

In medical field like you...but i do NOT state something that is not backed by medical studies and reasonable assumptions.

Those studies up there are from Journal Watch, a subscription that i have. Journal Watch is published by New England Journal of Medicine with editorials from said physicians. I left references there so that anyone can look up the studies for more info.

My question for YOU is...do you still stand by your comments that you made earlier after reading the above well-founded studies?

I sure do. Unlike you I have actully spent time with real criminals and real drug addicts in a real jail.

You want to complain about somthing? Then you should complain about how violent and habitual offenders can take plea bargans. Example, Mr. 2 time rapist gets arrested for raping ANOTHER 12 year old, his public defender gets him a plea because the arresting officer filled out the paperwork incorrectly, so he serves 6 months on a two year sentance and of course with good time "which is 18 on 30" he only ends up spending 4.5 month on a 2 year sentance. And he is out to rape another day.

Meanwhile some dumb 18 year old MBA student gets arrested on his way to a party for having a baggie of pot and gets turned into someones ***** later resulting in suicide.

I am referencing two REAL LIFE inmates from my time in the jail.

NOW tell me.. Who is worse the pot head or the rapist? Do you see why I take a Liberal stand on the pot subject?

I've noticed that you sure make a lot of assumptions. I would suggest spending a bit more time here, before assuming you know all about individual board members.

I have orders of magnitude more referances like this, none of them came from a magizine.

I may be just a lowly Paramedic and former Combat medic, but I am smart enough to know that a few potheads are the least of this countries problems.:usa2:

Have to say, by the far the worst effect of pot..

In all serious though, someone would have to have a good deal more on their record to justify an arrest and jail time for a simple possession charge. you don't just get hauled off to jail for having a little bag of pot

Oh nevermind...you really do need to re-read what you wrote...and as a MEDICAL professional, you need to be careful of what you say because someone may actually take what you say to be medical fact. And what you wrote is far far from fact.

So, you're NOT a nurse (RN or LVN at least)? You're a paramedic by training?

BTW, my medical knowledge is pretty decent...and my medical experience is not too shabby either. You may want to step back a little instead of assuming that you know more than me....

Yes. It is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana and it can result in a DUI, just like alcohol. Anyone with 5 nanograms or more of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (known as THC) per milliliter in whole blood (CRS 42-4-1301) while driving can be arrested for DUI. The consequences of DUI is dependent on the driver but they can include fines, jail time and a revoked license.
