And regarding the aluminum, 30 lbs weight savings is still 30 lbs. It all adds up. Doesn't ever rust either.

The no rust is the biggest reason to go aluminum. 30 pounds on a 5,000 pound 4Runner with another 1,000 pounds of armor and gear is a rounding error. (Yes, I know saving weight adds up sooner or later, but for the typical user you'll have much more than 30 pounds of other junk in the vehicle that doesn't need to be there. I'm just saying its not a significant number on the overall picture.)

You may already know this but some folks don’t, aluminum will still oxidize to a white/grey powdery surface. Unlike rust on steel, aluminum oxide is somewhat a protective coating but some don’t like the look of it.

It does but it is pretty easy to get off.

Guessing both are much stronger than the weight limits of the roof. Sometimes I carry a canoe which isn't that heavy by itself, but the length and curvature of the gunnels will focus most of the stress on the front wind deflector and rear bar.

Yep. I'm very familiar with it. My problem is that I've had rust eat through something before I even knew what was happening. Also, Rust tends to come through paint a bit more.

Yep, pretty much stronger than what the roof can handle. If you are putting most of the load on only the two crossbars, you could use steel for the front and rear, and aluminum for the rest if you wanted.

I had held off, looking for just the right aluminum full rack. The LFD in steel looked right, just didn't want the worry over rust. Just ordered the aluminum full rack, looking forward to putting it through its paces. Will be mounting a RTT on it first.

The full steel only weighs about 80 pounds, its really not that significant. Other tube racks weigh the same or more.

We do now have an aluminum version up on the website, but that still weighs about 50 pounds.

Is the full length aluminum rack in stock?
Any chance of getting black hardware for all those bolts down the side rails?
How do the front legs mount if no drill?

Full racks are at about a four week lead time at the moment.

At the moment, no, we still cant get black hardware. Most people are just painting the bolts before or after install.

The front feet just sit on the rain gutter. The side rails are stiff enough that they're basically just cosmetic, we have several of our 4Rs running the full racks without any front feet. The front feet can be installed to put a bit of upwards pressure on the front of the rack though if you are going to be putting anything heavy towards the front.

Same here. As I recall, they were in the process of a redesign of the 3/4 rack to better accommodate clearance of the sunroof. Is this still happening?

Yeah, should be changed this spring. We do still have about 8 sets of 3/4 side rails in stock for non-sunroof people, but we did take the racks off the site. We first measured the 3/4 out on a non-sunroof 4R, and made it about 4" too long for sunroof versions.
