Yes

Also, the production grease when examined will have them charging for repair?

Yes Maritime,.

The easiest "Upsell" this factory form of grease is Identified as seal failure,

The cust is informed that the axle seal has failed, the whole mess gets torn down and the little axle seal replaced,

If it is untouched factory lube, will go for 30 plus years easy, introduce a lithium grease,

The thing pukes oil/grease everywhere,,

So yes, Now this is not all Toyota dealerships, have documentation of folks being correctly informed that this is a "Permasealed unit" and to leave it alone if it aint broken,

Real good advise,

Or the best I have seen,

Flame war

Thanks for the nice attitude.

.......

In other news,

I'd think a serious issue could lay off the flaming a bit and stick to facts. How could an actual technical issue deteriorate to a flame war?

.......

So, use the grease they are recommending, which is different from the original fill, and what happens? (Something bad I assume.)

Also, the production grease when examined will have them charging for repair?

There aren't a lot of major technical folks here, so they can chime in. In the meantime, please remember a lot of the members are coming on worrying about something broken and looking for some knowledge sharing, and maybe move the argument a bit slower.

How could it turn into a flame war ??

I dont know for sure Rixxer doesnt like hearing he has been duped by the sales team,

Sorry, Yes I some how need to ignore that, stay objective and focused,

But its hard, the dude keeps calling me a liar, and just trying to share some information,

So thanks for your posts, gets things back on track

What I "don't like" is you lieing, and making up your own facts. 'specially when they are so easy to prove wrong.

Factory fill

What's the factory fill of the knuckle?

Factory fill of the steering knuckle is a #0 (semi fluid) or #1 grade grease(very soft)

From my research and testing a form of sodium based grease,

but it should be enough right now to just focus on the grade of grease.

That is the easy to identify,

WHich is it frank?
Now you gunna change your story?

All of that is wrong.
Factory grease was neither #0, #1, NOR was it sodium based.
NOR was is ALSO used in the wheel bearings, as you keep trying to say.
Toyota factory wheel bearing grease, in trucks, LANDCRUISERS, the old RWD cars' front wheel bearings, and some of the FWD cars with packable rear wheel bearings (such as tercel) was a thick yellow grease.
The stuff THAT I HAVE SEE WITH MY OWN EYES, PUT IN THE KNUCKLES OF SOLID AXLE TRUCKS AND LANDCRUISERS, BY THE FACTORY, was a thick, black, VERY OBVIOUSLY NOT SODIUM, grease, too thick to be a #0 or #1.
This, on cruisers with extremely low miles, unmolested, factory original, under warranty.

The story the facts are not changing,

as Maritime pointed out, keep this simple, slow it down a bit, It is rather easy to identify grease grade,

and this is "Obvious" while identifying Base can be complicated or more involved,

So Grade that is what we are focusing on, once that is established we can move on to Base,

Obvious:
You've never SEEN a factory, unmolested, perfect axle.
Obvious:
Sodium grease is severely outdated for automotive uses.
Obvious:
You're trying like mad to do anything you can, just to sell grease.

Tying like Mad,

Rixxer,

I could care less about selling grease, my mission is to re educate you,

I feel morally obligated to set you straight, It just does not seem right for me to sit on the side lines and allow this indoctrination,

Why ?

Because it trickles into my world, While I dont really care about the shananagins they pull @ the dealership,

I met a factory trained tech @ a Tire shop, milking a Axle seal failure job,

Brainwashed techs dont always stay @ the dealership, they come out into the real world and bring the Bull**** with them,

So heres a good post,,,

Re: Wenhar's Question Thread

Ok, I got to the point of scanning very fast through most of this BS.

This might be long and honestly sound like something that came out of Wenhar's mouth (or keyboard)

FIRST: Toyota sales propaganda; My truck says to change my oil every 12k miles I believe, while the oil salesman wants me to change it every six. Most people who buy a new vehicle, get it serviced at the dealer, so this would be profitable for Toyota to have you change your oil that often. My 2007 prius even with the higher speeds, leaner fuel ratio, and worse fuels recommended 5,000 miles between oil changes.

Second: for me, it sounds like KIRK was saying to TAKE IT TO SOMEONE WHO WILL FOLLOW THE FSM.

Third: I personally have worked on big rig trailers and trailer dolly hubs that use OIL in there wheel hubs, it actively draws heat and debris away from the bearing surface and provide fresh lubrication.

3.1 I believe CV joints do run a thinner joint

Four: I have seen a few axles that have knuckles FULL of soup with NO SIGN of grease anywhere.

4.1 I have also seen these same axle FULL of soup not leaking it out the wiper seals

I don't know what else to say, I actually tried to keep it short.

I have also seen factories do things different then the real world, like different grade bearings or rod journals using color codes from the factory, real world, we would correctly machine the part for the mass produced bearings available. So it wouldn't surprise me if from the factory these were filled with a product that may have been very popular in another country, or with a product that they were able to mass produce or that they ordered in bulk to originally fill these with. It also wouldn't surprise me if the first FSM that left the hand of Toyota technicians headed to the states contained info to fill these knuckles with grease, even if they were filled with something other then that from the factory, as grease would be what was available.

So, these live axles were produced for quite a while. I'm sure that a dealer has opened up one recently, maybe an fj80. What was inside the knuckle of an fj80 from the factory? Someone for some reason opened up a knuckle that only had a few thousand miles on it and knows what was inside that knuckle.

REGARDLESS of all this crap above.....
you need to take into consideration the following:

what is the cost and availability of this product, the usefulness of it, what benefits COULD it provide, regardless of what came in the axle.

I believe most people prefer grease. It stays put even when you pull apart your axle, when you break something it holds the broken pieces in place instead of allowing them to get into other areas and doing more damage. You can pull apart an axle, replace a part and only need to grease new parts or parts that were cleaned because of contamination. This stuff would have to be properly drained and most likely not be reused especially if a break occurred. I feel that 99% of the time I was in an axle was because of breakage, or even to mess with a diff or brakes. If I had a rig that was using a Toyota live axle to drive freeway miles with a heavy load didn't use 4wd much, and didn't use it for rock crawling (for some reason I feel like I am describing a SAS'ed chinook or dolphin that was used for an out door enthusiast to camp in)

BLAH this is too much, I wouldn't use it in something that you intentionally drive into harms way, plan on upgrading, modifying and junk like that.

Does it matter if this is what Toyota put in from the factory NO

What matters is if there would be a benefit TODAY to put this into your knuckle. Ive answered, for me it would not be a benefit.

Do I think that there is a use for this product MOST DEFINITALLY, but not on a crawler as he is actively trying to advertise this stuff too.

hopefully I can keep up on responses to my post now"

From Wenhars ? thread on Crawler,,,

Which by the way has Never been answered, as simple ?

Yep Trying like Mad, glad you at least recognize that, Rixxer, Thanks,

Et Lux in tenebris lucet,

Yes, wenhar, one of your MANY troll accounts.
Way to go, frank.

Yes Rixxer it is required to sneak into the backdoor of the "Mushroom Factory,s"

Weather they are Black, Or Grey,

On this "White site" I am allowed to walk right in thru the Frt door,

I paid 100 bucks to walk in thru the Frt door of your "Black" 4x4network to begin your re education,

Now I have drawn you out into the the light, Rixxer, your alone, naked and scared,

Your Toyota propaganda is not flying here, as you can see,,

Et Lux in tenebris lucet, Et Tenebris Non comprehendunt

You cannot prove me wrong, frank.
All lof your wrongs, still do not add up to a right.
You cannot "re-educate" me, I know WAY more about this subject than you do.

Oh... and your black screen, white screen, grey screen stuff is really kinda dumb.

get the popcorn

You cannot prove me wrong, frank.
All lof your wrongs, still do not add up to a right.

Rixxer Dumb or not it follows the definition,

White, Grey, and Black Propaganda
From Psychological Warfare, page 44

White propaganda is issued from an acknowledged source... This type of propaganda is associated with overt psychological operations.
Grey propaganda does not clearly identify any source.
Black propaganda purports to emanate from a source other than the true one. This type of propaganda is associated with covert psychological operations.

Example of Black Propaganda
Guard Against Venereal Diseases

Lately there has been a great increase in the number of venereal diseases among our officers and men owing to prolific contacts with Filipino women of dubious character.
Due to hard times and stricken conditions brought about by the Japanese occupation of the islands, Filipino women are willing to offer themselves for a small amount of foodstuffs. It is advisable in such cases to take full protective measures by use of condoms, protective medicines, etc.; better still to hold intercourse only with wives, virgins, or women of respective [sic] character.
Furthermore, in view of the increase in pro-American leanings, many Filipino women are more than willing to offer themselves to American soldiers, and due to the fact that Filipinos have no knowledge of hygiene, disease carriers are rampant and due care must be taken.

So Rixxer for some reason this follows the Black, White, Grey propaganda,

Ih8mud, Pirate Yota tech, and even the hole you hide in the4x4network are BLACK

Grey, would be Utah Rock crawler,

White, Right here in the light,, it has followed this theme quite well,,,

Crawler site grey,,,

So call it a what you want, but here in the white light, Masters of the Obvious,

Your stuck in the darkness stuck like that :spider:

In the Toyota muck of deception,

Very sad, I will get you out,
