The New Ford Bronco Debut Ad Nauseam - 8pm Eastern, July 13, 2020

I cannot think of a bigger way to piss away your money than on a Porche unless of course you are buying a BMW.

So much for superior engineering...

I have been daily driving my Porsche for 8 years now (95,000 miles) with zero issues (including race track use). I also drive her during New England winters (with dedicated snow tires) and there is ZERO rust on the car...as opposed to my 4Runner after just three winters.

Yes Porsche has had the issues you mentioned with some of their models...but I don’t know of any car manufacturer that doesn’t have any.

I have been waiting and waiting for the Bronco as a replacement to my 08 4th gen LE. It has been the best vehicle I have ever owned but I need something updated.

Since it was only $100 and refundable I jumped right at 8pm EST Monday night and reserved both a First Edition and Outer Banks before really digging into the specs or prices.

Looks wise I say Ford knocked it out of the park. I really love the 4 door.

Options wise there are some real limitations that are annoying. Like you cant get the touted manual with the v6 or the Sasquatch package.

The laughable towing capacity of 3500 will probably end up being a deal breaker for me and Ill likely cancel my reservations. I need to be able to tow my boat drop it in the water.

I thought the Bronco was going to be a truck but its really just a toy like a Jeep. I dont know what Ill do now.... maybe a Gladiator Rubicon?

Isn't there only 40hp or so difference between the 4 and 6? I'd stick with the 4 mated to a handshaker

Porsche Intermediate Shaft Bearing issue
Most models of the 996 generation of the Porsche 911 (excluding GT3 / GT3 RS / GT2 & Turbo models) sports car were afflicted with a vulnerability in the intermediate shaft (IMS) that drove their engines' camshafts. Failure of the ball bearing within the IMS leads to varying degrees of engine failure. In general, after an IMS bearing failure, the engine internals are contaminated with debris from the failure that requires the engine to be stripped and rebuilt. In severe failure modes, cam timing may be affected, leading to valve-piston impact, necessitating a rebuild or replacement of the entire engine.

Rear Main Seal Leaks
Though it seems a small percentage of 997s actually have the problem, this model is unfortunately notorious for rear main seal (RMS) leaks. The problem seems to happen more with manual transmission cars, and can have disastrous consequences.

Dude. 996 and 997? The newest one of those cars is 15 years old.

Toyota had frames self destruct on their Tacomas, they hid engine sludging issues on their 4 cylinder engines, and denied they had a defective T/O bearing design in their Tacoma and FJ Cruiser 6MT. They still can't get a hold on their rusting issues, especially on Japanese made cars and trucks.

Reliability/quality is the most attractive thing to me in a vehicle - even more so the older I get.

That said, I completely understand people buying Porsches and countless other makes/models. At its core, I believe the reason is that life is to be lived. I've never owned a Porsche, BMW, Audi, Corvette, Mustang, Challenger, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. But I still know they all have their fun-to-drive appeal. I was once a more sports-car-oriented guy (1984 Supra - yeah, I know, but it was decent for its day), so even though I didn't experience many cool cars, I understand that crisp handling and performance is fun. I think one of the trade-offs of engineering a car to take advantage of its parts is that sometimes, those parts fail. It's the cost of fun/performance, IMO.

As LandCruiser pointed out, you can pick apart Toyotas too, and any other manufacturer. Toyotas have historically fewer problems, but they do have them. Nobody is immune. It's just that Toyota, by and large, sells reliability, while Porsche primarily sells performance. You don't buy a Porsche because you want it to last for 300k, you buy it because it's fast.

....and Toyotas cost 1/3 of what a Porsche does

I don't care what any magazine or article says about it. I'll be a believer in its capabilities when I see one on the trail doing the stuff I do. I'm sure they'll do fine, I'm just not selling my 4Runner for one.

On the plus side FJ prices will be going down with all the FJ owners selling theirs for the latest and greatest retro truck.

I wonder how much insurance Ford baked into the price of the New Bronco.
I can see Bobby from Brooklyn trying to "rock climb" on the rocks and cliffs in the Palisades Park only to flip the thing over and get squished like a bug.

"Its in Ford's TV commercial so anyone should be able to do it right?" says the 4 Lawyers who have been hired by Bobbies girlfriend and Bobbies Mom.

If it's like the Raptor, I'm guessing zero.

There were broken frames and youtube videos of sick jumps with airbag deployments and broken control arms for months after they released them.

The new one is a bit less fragile.

Nice and all, but after four Fords in a row that were POS, I am not touching anything aside a Superduty.

As for the Bronco, I think they got it right, great that they introduced it and maybe it will be a positive influence on the 6th gen 4r to keep it from drifting into soccer mom territory too much, and becoming just a slightly larger Highlander.

Wow you seem to know a lot about Porsche. You must have a lot of experience with them and be an expert?

Well I'm coming in the talk a little late but will I consider a new Bronco..heel yes!
It checks enough boxes for me and has several things i'm "ok" with that once they hit showroom floors I'll go look at them and size them up. After having two full size Bronco's I'm really looking forward to the new ones. Compared to the 4Runner.....DIRECT competition, anyone who thinks its not - you just aren't being honest with yourself. Interior looks plasticky...so does my 2012 4Runner! Its got lots of plastic creaks from the loose center console..something in the rear etc etc. Sure certain things are gimmicky like the GOAT system but oh well. It doesn't have a 4wd lever...not a big concern. Sure I would never use all the GOAT settings...I don't use all the settings with my KDSS system.
I have no intention of removing doors and roof so I couldn't care less about those. 35in package...maybe but 33's have done me good for the entire 4runner ownership and considering how much the package is Ill just get whatever wheel and tires i want through work lol.
I would most def prefer the 5.0 but at least the 2.7 is a torque monster for its size. The 10spd trans is wonderful...yup I said it. I do want to see it with the standard 8in screen compared to the 12in screen and what the price difference is. I also want to see how it compares to the room of the 4Runner of course since Im a bigger dude.
I have been waiting for a new 4Runner but we all know that isnt coming anytime soon. Maybe by the sale of the Bronco's there might be talk/real rumors of whats coming next. But for now the new Bronco is the only thing on my radar to replace my T4R and yes yes yes I know quality wont be same. My T4r has been pretty much trouble free but oh well crap happens...after the warranty is out I would have access to at least 5 master techs 5-6 days a week lol.

Very valid points. Toyota has been lazy with the 4R and Tundra for far too long. I think it is a cocky company, resting on its laurels. They better shape up- the competition is heating up like crazy. Maybe they don't care about things that sell okay though Tundra sales were not great. I think the Highlander, Rav4, and 4R were doing well. My buddy (another Jeep+Toyota guy like me) was considering replacing his 5th Gen 4R with a Range Rover Defender (I told him not to) but he has switched to the Bronco now. He has the same complaint- the 4R feels and acts old inside.

It would be interesting to see posts from former T4R owners who switch to a Bronco, once that happens. I won't be making a switch myself, but it would be interesting to see how well/poorly Ford nails this.

One of my bosses is a Range Rover guy and he was thinking about the new Defender as well....now he just said he will wait 3yrs or so and buy a Bronco lol.
I traded a 2012 JKU in for my 4Runner and would never go back to a Chrysler product even if they dropped the Hemi in and even when I have techs who could work on it after warranty lol.

I have access to just about any type of vehicle...Ive considered newer Expeditions...ehh , they look great lifted but not what I want right now
Newer Tahoe's....hellll no
anything german like larger benz or bmw SUV's...just not me even though the AMG side does spark my drag racer side.
Sequoia....great size...15yrs old
any midsize unibody SUV does ZERO for me.
Durango V8...great power horrible quality and still now OLD.

I've considered larger cars like the GS350/Ls430...maybe one day and a side chick but ehh. So yeah I consider lots lol

Bronco looks pretty sweet.

I don’t really get all the Ford hate and posturing. Doesn’t have to be a Toyota for me to appreciate it from a “car guy” standpoint.

Regardless of product or quality, they are doing the one thing we wish Toyota would do. Ford does try to push past conventional thinking and actually take risks in product and innovation. For that I applaud them. Plus competition is a good thing.

This is definitely going to provide competition for the 4Runner market. Unfortunately, it really may be too late for it to substantially affect the next 4Runner generation, we may actually be too late in the game, 2023 model year is only two years away. Maybe a mid-cycle refresh.
