The old sagging rear end.....

I am planning on doing some suspension mods/uprgrades to my 97 2wd sr5, and was contemplating the "pre-runner" look. I'm starting to get the ugly "sag" look to the rear end on the 4runner, so I was gonna do all 4 shocks and springs.

I have read about the 99 4x4 springs (w/ 16" tire option) and was thinking of ordering a set. They are said to give about 2" difference in height on 96-98 from stock spring height. I have a new set of Bilstein's for 4x4 application, I was thinking of using along w/ the springs.

Has anyone here used this combination on a 2wd? We sell the Tundra 4x4 shocks and springs @ work all the time for the 2wd to level them out in the front. In looking @ the 4runner, I don't see why the same kind of swap wouldn't work. 4x4 shocks and springs on a 2wd.

If anyone has any before and after pics, please share them!

Just go with the performance products springs.

Here's a 2wd with the bilsteins you mentioned and PP springs 1" lift:

Looks good. You'll notice Iceman carries a lot of stuff in the rear: Ladder, roof rack, tow hitch, rear wing, and who knows what in the trunk. That's the reason the front looks slightly higher.

Bilsteins may be stiff for a 3rd gen

I like the Bilstein products but would politely suggest that you may find their 4x4 shock offering a bit too stiff for a 2wd rig.


The ride on my 99 was quite stiff and I was not overly fond of it until I loaded up with an ARB bumper on the front end.

Everyone's butt is different and road feel is unique to each of us, that is just my .02 worth.

I do hear and read good things said about the Tokico Trekmasters.

My 98 had a recall on the rear springs due to the sag issue. I think 97's also were included, but not sure. Might want to call your local dealership. At least it will be a temporary FREE solution while you decide on your next suspension set up. :bigok:

I did the recall about a year ago (I work for a Toyota dealer ) and it is still not what it should be.

I do believe I will be going w/ the PP springs.
