The Overland Adventures - 4th Gen Build!

Currently my front setup is a pair of 5100s set at 2.5" of lift and stock springs... this left the front a little lower than the rear and it was driving me nuts... So, over the weekend I took the time to swap in some different front coils in hopes of obtaining a little more lift up front to level it out! I hate rake! So, I grabbed a pair of STOCK 5th gen SR5 coils from a friend and slapped them on... luckily they worked and netted me right at 1" of lift! Also, oddly enough, I swear the ride is even smoother than before! It drives GREAT!

Sitting nice and level now!

Nice! I just added Wheeler's 3/8'' urethane top plate spacers to my 5100s to get some extra height out of them. There is enough shock travel with the 5100s so that they still won't bottom out when cycled with a 3/8'' spacer installed. Will need a tubular UCA to get some extra down travel to make the most of them though.

Nice! Yeah, I plan on upgrading to a nice aftermarket UCA before too long to help with travel and alignment, I'm now flirting with the "I NEED UCAs to be able to get a good alignment" line, since I'm at 3.5" of lift now.

Do you have a write-up or more pictures of the install on that thing? I really really like the look of the snorkel, and the added benefits/protection from them. It sucks that Safari hasn't made one, but I am digging the LC80 option. Did you have to cut the flares at all? And is the stock airbox still used, or do you replace it all with pipe? Thanks!

I was in a hurry to get the install finished, so I didn't take any pics during install, but it was pretty easy and straight forward. It comes with a template that will help you line it up properly. I was able to leave my plastic cladding untouched/untrimmed, although I do think it would've been a slightly easier install had I trimmed it... I had to really push in on the snorkel to get enough threads on one of the bolts to get it started, then once it started I just sucked it up by tightening down the bolt. I just didn't want to trim the cladding, so if for some reason in the future I need to ditch the snorkel and have to get a new fender I wouldn't have to buy new cladding as well...

Here's what I did...

1. Remove inner-fender liner
2. Remove stock air box
3. Cut holes out of template then tape template to back of snorkel
4. Line snorkel up (no good way to do this, I just eyeballed it. I put the snorkel as far back as I could without it making contact with the door/window frame when the door was opening.)
5. Once you have the snorkel lined up via eyeballing it, tape the template in place.
6. Cut your big hole first
7. Drill your other small holes second
8. Trim out inner fender some to give more room for the provided coupling (I was able to keep mine to where it's not noticeable to the untrained eye)
9. Bolt the snorkel up to the fender
10. Attach the provided coupling to the stock air box
11. Set air box in place and attach coupling to snorkel tube
12. Seal water drain holes in stock air box
13. Reassemble stock air box
14. Reinstall inner-fender liner
15. Go drive through deep water!

Lost 1-2 mpg with lift and tires, but still getting 15.5-16.5 according to the on-dash mpg thing, and I re-set it every fill-up. Getting about 300 miles to a tank. Still pretty good mileage, IMO, and another good reason to go skinny on the tires!

Have you recalibrated the speedo yet? The stock setup vs your new tires will net you some MPG back. sometimes the larger tire and lower highway cruising rpm can net higher than stock mpg if done for long distances. it is the stop and go that will kill you.

I had 35's on my Jeep Wrangler and never did a speedo recal. when I ran 4.88 gears in the diffs it brought me back closer to stock ratios with the larger tires and I noticed a gain of about 4 mpg over stock tires.

also noticed your post on the HAM radio. Look at the Antenna Farm site, tons of options. I personally run a universal mount on the back hatch with a triband antenna for my radio.

On a side note, have you looked into Proclips? they make some nice no drill mounting options for the das of the 4runner.

No, I haven't recalibrated the speedo yet! It's on the to-do list though!

Right now I'm running a Comet SBB5 antenna on a Browning NMO mag mount! It's working great, but I do think I'm going to need to find a different mounting option and have been eyeballing that exact Comet lip mount you linked me to! Thanks!

I've been thinking about doing this for a while.. drilling a hole in my perfectly good fender has been the mental road block lol

It's just a fender! They are cheap and easy to replace, if needed! Go for it! I'd be a little more leery of it if it were the quarter panel though.... Don't think I could do that... haha!

Welcome welcome! V8 is nice eh?

I can snag some pictures of my mount and antenna setup.

Also have you pulled the diode yet to open up your radio to commercial band yet? very common MOD and not illegal unless you transmit. very handy in an emergency... or zombie appoco...
