Hey Kid, I didn't realize you were running Maxxis Bighorns. I'm considering these for my next set of tires. Care to share your thoughts on them?

i love the bighorns, in fact this is the second set i have ran. my first ones where 285s. the reason i went with them is the price. for the price they can not be beat. they will take you anyplace the BFG KM2s will, or the GoodYear MTRs ect. and for a lot less money, enough money to basically buy a full size spare compared to the KM2s. and i think these perform better in snow and ice than the KM2s. the down sides to them are they are in the noisy field, but if you ask me, this is a truck, and a 4wd, not a lexus or acura, so to me noise is a mute issue(pun intended). and the other complaint i had was the balancing... i had some issues, and it took more trys to get them balanced than ive ever had, i actually had two of them replaced because they were so bad, and would not balance out even close -the tires were physically out of round. -but my 285s were fine never had that issue. i have heard from a couple tire shops that 305s tend to really shake the smaller trucks like ours because its more of a larger truck size tire, they dont get so detailed with the tire and perfection of it, as it does not affect the larger trucks as much... i guess it makes sense but i think i just got a bad set. i like the tires and they do great for me, after about 4k or so they have continued to smoothen out and become less and less of an issue, though they still took a lot of weight, but they are noticeably smoother than day 1. but performance is top quality if you ask me, i have no complaints there, and i have had them in mud, rocks, gravel, sand, snow, ice, wet grass, you name it, they have done great and are very predictable.
its a place out in the oregon coast range... i really dont want to put it out exactly where it is as its a hunting camp that has been getting trashed recently -not saying that you would go out and trash it, but who knows who else is reading this and would go out there... its a very nice camp and a lot of hard work and man hours, and private money has gone into making it a nice camp. while we were there a couple people drove by and we could tell they wanted to camp there and where looking to, but they also appeared to just be out there to party and yeah. when we went out on thursday we stopped off and bought some hay bails to lay down under the tents and around camp to soak up any mud/water and did a lot of clean up of general trash and other crap people had left behind -cans, shotgun shells, hoses(garden type), propane canisters and other random crap. when we rolled into camp there was already a rig in there and they guy was cool with us staying as he was gonna be leaving in the morning. that night we bs'd with him and he told us a lot of the history of the camp... apparently his family has been using it as a hunting camp for over the last 40 years, and made it what is today. so yeah we had already been planing on leaving it better than when we showed up, but this helped encouraged us to do so. the guy also told us some of the struggles with the camp, and the vandalism ect that had been going on, and the fight with the USFS, and the BLM about not shutting it down. basically it comes down to if the camp starts getting trashed or parties happening out there, it will be tore up and closed off.
we found it about a month ago when we headed out there for a day of exploring and site recon for this camping trip. we wanted something secluded and yet nice. while this was not as secluded as we had wanted it was very nice and well worth the trade off -we only had minimal traffic out there, and only two other groups looked like they wanted it, but they also looked quasi local as well, so im sure they already knew about it. the camp is big enough to pull a few good sized RVs into and stay a while, i think you could easily get 4 5th wheels in there. -i know the guy we talked to brings out 3 and a couple of pickup bed campers when they set up for hunting season.
the bridge is right next to the camp on the main road , the creek runs right next to the camp, and under the bridge. a perfect source for clean water, and if it was warmer a cool dip in the water, as there are a couple fairly deep pools.

IMG_20140516_195819045 by isaacyocum, on Flickrthat fish was some of the best salmon i have ever had -a big thank you to [MENTION=49815]ryankmasuda[/MENTION] for the fish. he caught it fresh in the columbia but could not make the trip, he gave us some nice thick steaks and yeah wow my first time cooking like, that i think i did that fish good. -and im not really a fish/sea food kinda person. next time Ryan, youre coming out with us!

yeah noisy, but as soon as i roll up my windows and turn the radio on, i dont hear the tires anymore... but i like the sound of the tires and hearing the road noise, ect so i dont always have my radio on. to me the sound is music, something about the hum of mud tires idk i guess im strange, but its nostalgic for me.
im not sure to be honest, i bought them at about 60% life, but i got about at least 30k out of them, and some good wheeling trips on them in that time. -along with several road trips down to cali. it was their performance in the time that i had them that sold me on getting them again, that and cost. i knew i was gonna get a tire that would do everything i wanted and do it well. even with my balancing issues i would not hesitate to buy them again tomorrow if i needed to.

Welp I should be getting my rear shocks replaces this week. I'm also thinking I'm gonna buy a new air bag kit to help hold the weight back there. -I tip the scales at 5100+ lbs on a daily basis load. Man I need a regear and SC. no wonder I'm lucky to get 16mpg on the hwy.

so i went camping this past weekend and had a chance to actually use the rear bumper, and boy was it nice! from the light pole to help set up camp and light the camp, to the table for preping the food(amazing food if i do say so myself) it all worked great, and i am very happy with it. this trip was originally planned as a get away before i leave for deployment but due to somethings happening outside of my control i may not end up going. but that did not stop us from this camping trip. a couple friends and i headed out of town on thursday to go kick back in the woods, drink a few beers, eat some good food, chill out/kick back and do nothing other than what ever we felt like doing, like shooting guns, building big fires, and sleeping in and staying up late...
on to the pictures cause well sense you weren't there i wont bore you with any more of the details as most of it is insider stuff and would probably bore you

Can I ask where this was taken? These pictures are AWESOME and I am making a trip out west at the beginning of next year. Just trying to get some cool ideas.

You can.... But I already answered that a few posts above. I'm not going to disclose the location. In the past when nice places have been disclosed online and in forums people have gone there and trashed the place in a matter of weeks and months. Totally destroying something that had been around for decades and had zero respect and fuqs given about other people. I'm not saying you would do this but I don't know who else is reading this... We only stumbles across this place by accident and feel lucky enough and respect the hard work enough not to jeopardize the spot like that

I think it might be okay to say what part of the state this particular location is at. An observant reader might already know the forest that [MENTION=49442]thekid[/MENTION] is most likely to visit. Within said forest there are many of gems to find that are just as beautiful as Isaacs spot. This is not my thread, so I will leave it up to Isaac whether or not he wants to disclose the mountain range he was at. I agree completely about losers that destroy our beautiful forest and one can never be too cautious when on a public forum. I for one am disgusted with the amount of garbage I find in the woods, both human and objects.

Its in the coast range in northern Oregon, west of Portland.
When we left I had loaded up a good portion of my trailer with trash from others... Everything from old car parts to garden hoses, to general trash. Its reasons like that that I get really cautious about disclosure of nice spots

That's just what I was thinking, with that information someone can research and find a general area to visit. I really don't understand why people use our forest as a garbage bump. I mean beds, chairs washer and dryers you name and people will throw it out. I hope I didn't step on your toes Isaac, however I think that general location is acceptable.

I've found a full stainless steel fridge and large stainless steel BBQ thrown over the edge of a cliff before. Looked brand new other than the marks from them rolling. They were sitting next to two full size leather couches. Looked like a divorce... But still. Why get rid of it there?

its sad really because the only thing people are doing is hurting themselfs in the long run... the forest service will just continue to shut down and block off access to these places, and eventually to all nature period at this rate. in that area along so many roads have been blocked off and made impassable and campsites taken out, that fewer and fewer responsible people come out there, and yet it only makes the ones who trash it more and more likely to come out -less people to see them do it and less of a chance of getting caught. and when fewer and fewer people go out there, more and more interest in the areas dwindles and activism or advocates not only lose interest and support but die off without passing on the "good times" and memories to the younger generations... pretty soon nothing will be available to us, not because we dont care, but because we dont know any better, we wont know what we are missing.
sorry for being on my soap box here, but its saddening to me to watch this happen. places i went and played when i was a child, i can no long take my kids to, and my fear is that i am not the only one, but i dont know what else to do other than clean up what i can, and do my best to protect as much as i can. -be the change in the world you want to see, dont wait for others.

I am in agreeance with you guys. I just wanted an idea of where I might be able to find something like that. Its always better to find your own spot....then get hung up on someone elses. I call Alaska home, even though I am temporarily misplaced in North Carolina. Its the same there, except, there are quite a few places you cant take any motor vehicles, its all by foot. I have packed out quite a bit of trash, and its sad. I will not take anyone to any of my spots, not without knowing I can trust them. But with all the lucrative Alaska this and Alaska that on TV, and so many clowns moving to AK. Its all slowly getting thrashed too. Trying to lock up my 40 acres in the woods, about halfway between Fairbanks and Anchorage now.
One of the few reasons I am happy there are so many 4 wheeling clubs. because we are the few who will go out and dedicate a weekend to cleaning up the trail, and all the crap that the miscreants left behind.

so i got my "new" rear shocks, and some new firestone airbags for the rear of my 4runner, hopefully gonna be installing these this weekend and getting a normal ride back.
