the Rescue Runner build thread

You put a lot of TCL and hard work into that rig. Look forward to seeing what you do with an LC. Continue to update us here as to what you end up with and the build!

Two other things to look out for is a leaking radiator (occurs, but not too common) along with the sticking calipers (like the 4th gen 4runners). The clear coat also likes to peel off, starting on the hood.

Goodyear Gatorback belts seemed to work best as a serp belt replacement.

It is a real nice ride. I like the blue color myself. Just be prepared to spend more $$$ on OEM parts.

new owner of a GX 470, or prado 120 depending on how you want to look at it. so far i like it. it has a few things that need to be addressed. needs wheels and tires -my old set of tundra wheels will do, but i dont think i can fit 285s on this. only one way to find out i guess. -first i have to have wheel locks removed(didnt come with a key). and then a few interior things like plastic caps and trim pieces to replace, along with a couple bulbs. already ordered a full set of HIDs for it. probably gonna get the weathertech mats and some window vents as well as a vent for the sunroof. it does have a leak from either the sunroof or the windshield(both have been replaced) and that creates a short in the window switch and drains the battery.

i absolutely love the v8, it has so much grunt compared to the 3rd gen. fuel economy is better, and it has way more interior room, not to mention it can seat 8. i opted out on the ML/Nav system as its a total junk and very limiting, not upgradeable. its silver pine metallic in color(which was my second choice, wanted a blue ash mica, but couldnt find any) with grey leather interior. i will get pics as soon as i can.

Glad you were able to find one to your liking! Nice Christmas present to yourself!

Was this the one you were looking at in Seattle?

Can't wait to see your 470 build. My coworker has been looking for one to replace his FJc. They look pretty promising, I might look into one when I have kids and they are old enough to travel. Did you find one with KDSS?

Nice!

I'm sure that thing is going to be sick! Staring over with all the knowledge and skills you've gained building the 3rd gen. Definitely going to be a good one. I know if I got to start over or on another rig I'd do a few things differently myself.

I expect something similar to this GX.... in oohhhh... a few weeks.

Very jealous and great choice.

I can't wait to see it when it gets to this point. Lol.

Lol guys its not gonna get that way for a long while... The wife said no mods till its paid off... So that means no visible mods lol. Already ordered a full HID setup for it from ddm. Went ahead and put my old wheels from my 4runner on it -the hypersilver tundra wheels w/285s... Yes they fit, rub a little again at full lock and stuff but not bad, very drivable as that is almost never seen in daily driving for me and never above 5mph. The look we immensely improved immediately.

So my plan for this will be a capable daily driver. So I'm gonna add a hidden winch in behind the factory bumper, this will break my rules but it will have a synthetic line on it -zeon 8S, gonna do a ARB rear locker at some point along with Nitro 4.30 or 4.56( haven't made up my mind yet) I want to do full aluminum skids and metaltech sliders. Only when the air suspension goes out will I lift it (2-2.5"). I will probably upgrade the electrical system by adding in a power grid for aftermarket stuff.

But after today on Mt Hood I am really impressed with the awd system and traction control. It has some nice features like "start in 2nd" for snow and ice, DHDC, and the center locking diff. Mine does not have the KDSS, as I did not want it( makes installing sliders virtually impossible without removing, and is just a added cost only to take out when I want to do something). I also opted out of the navigation system as it s junk and very limiting.

We need at least one pic of the outside and inside. You need to team up with BlackCat who bought a 2003 470 I think, for repair info and the like.

KDSS is nice when working but German like in repair costs when it needs replacing. And the Nav system is just awful.

I wish there was a more active group in the GX section... I know IanB has one as well as a couple other former 4runner guys. These are basically a luxurious 4th gen v8. The same suspension and frame. The only difference is the coach work. 90% of the workings of these are Toyota 4runner. Every relay and switch ect. I have found is marked Toyota / denso.

I'll get a pic of the inside. I'm gonna be getting a full weathertech digital liner kit for this. The kids already got muddy tracks on the carpet. I just about had a coronary when my son climbed over the middle seat with his shoes on after playing outside in the snow and a little mud... I had to remind myself its new to him too and he doesn't understand... (count to 10, count to 10)

Truck looks really nice! As for GX forums, there's a lot of info on Club Lexus forums in the GX 1st gen section, not a pile of activity anymore, but lots of info you can search for and read through. For more off-road oriented stuff, check the 120 section on IH8MUD.
