And Toyota Highlander? Chevy Equinox or Arcadia? Infiniti SUVs? Yeah, the Pilot may be a bit better, but that is because Honda designs all their trucks and SUVs so much alike!
I believe the 7.6 on the Explorer...i don't believe Toyota's 9.1 on the 4runner...and you know that Toyota is quite generous with its stats!

And Thai, what you fail to realize is that the Ford Explorer was once in the same class as the 4Runner, Pathfinder, Blazer, etc...
Now you are comparing it to the Pilot, Highlander, Equinox- which is exactly our point.
What was once a FOUR wheel drive, FULL FRAME, SOLID REAR AXLE TRUCK, is now a cookie cutter ALL wheel drive, UNIBODY, fully INDEPENDENT suspension CROSSOVER.
Much like the new Grand Cherokee- it's like ford and Chrysler got together to build the same car- they even have the same shape!

If I had to take a 3000 mile road trip across the states and back I'd probably rather do it in the Explorer than a TE 4Runner and that's what it's main purpose that Ford designed it for since I bet way less than 1% of all Explorers would really see much beyond a dirt road so I'm sure 99% of Explorer buyers never even considered a truck based SUV.
4Runners,Xterras,Wranglers and the like make up a ever shrinking class of vehicles and let's hope Toyota doesn't turn the 4Runner into a crossover someday.

I understand but Ford does not advertise it as such...you don't see bogus video of it crossing the Rubicon trail...unlike what Mercedes did to the ML several years ago!
Ford has no interest in an offloading SUV...they already have the Raptor for anything off-road related. The heart of the midsize SUV class is the crossover...this is where the money is. This is why Ford and Toyota have all variation of the theme.

Very true. It's the very sad difference between an SUV and a CUV (aka 4wd minivan) that we are stuck with. I would love to see Ford bring back both the early Bronco and the full size Bronco but those days are long gone.

Maybe not. I found this, it's the 2012 Bronco concept vehicle. It's a throwback to the early Bronco and appears to be targeted to more of a Jeep CJ/Wrangler market than an SUV/CUV market. Notice the winch integrated into the bottom of the grill molding.

Maybe its a good thing that the 4runner has one less direct competitor. Even though the rest of the world will still probably call the explorer a SUV which, now, it is clearly not. But think about it, some folks still prefer a frame-on-body suv. With the explorer de-framed that leaves the 4runner, pathfinder, wrangler, and xterra right? With the IRS that the pathfinder has its not much of a trail vehicle either. So that leaves three. One is unreliable, one is cramped, and one is perfect.
Really though, I think ford missed an opportunity here. Ford has the escape, the edge, and the flex. Why bring in another CUV? I feel that they could have re-invented the explorer using cues from the raptor. Bring on a wrangler fighting true body-on-frame SUV that can really wheel. Give us usable approach and departure angles. Give us real ground clearance and real skid plates for when we run out of ground clearance. Give us real All-terrain tires that won't go flat if we jump a curb. They could drop in one of their eco-boost engines and still get ok mpg's. Maybe, for the 4runners sake, its a good thing ford doesn't think like me.
