Like I said mobil1 makes the best oil (my opinion) but I am not to sure their filters are better than the $3.99 toyota filter engineered for our trucks with better internal components.

So the TRD is smaller and worse quality than a D3, that's really surprising and disappointing for TRD.

I wouldn't say the quality is worse, its more about a personal sense of worth, I don't feel like paying $14 for a filter with a 99 cent nut on top.

Thanks for posting the link. Fascinating and valuable research that Chris at Tacoma World has done. I buy only Toyota filters and change my own oil, and now I am very glad that I do!

Only thing is that there is nothing scientific about what he did. Amount of square inches of media filter has nothing to do with how well and how much it can actually filter. I have been using the Amsoil filters for years and have seen the testing data about how much contaminates they can hold and how fine they will filter down to and nobody beats them as far as I know. Also, nobody guarantees an oil and filter related engine problem or failure like Amsoil does.

More filter media means your oil stays cleaner for longer. I only use OEM filters since OEM is best quality most of the time. Aren't OEM filters just rebranded Denso filters though?

I have some Frams that have been sitting in my garage, it's crazy how crap quality they are compared to OEM.

This is about as scientific as what Bob-The-oil-Guy did. Sorry, but it's NOT very scientific.

More filter media does NOT mean the oil stays cleaner longer....UNLESS it's the same material. Was there a material analysis done to determine if it's the same material?? I missed that report if it was there.

What I want to see is a flow analysis...Show me the how much dirt is actually being filtered over a given amount of time....AND is there any significant difference to the engine?? All this needs to be done under controlled environment for proper analysis. Hundreds or maybe even thousands of tests to get a good sample set of data. That's the way good engineering testing is done.

Fram may make a cheap filter...Let's for argument sake it does...But does that mean it's causing any problem??? If it was then we'd be seeing thousands (if not tens of thousands) of engines dying every year because of the bad Fram filters...Fram outsells it's next 4 competitors COMBINED. So if there was a problem..we'd have heard about it by now.

And for the record...I mainly use OEM filters..because my local dealer will sell me a case at $3 each filter. Wall-Mart doesn't car how many I buy...same price.

I use any filter that is on sale and any off the shelf 5w30 synthetic oil that is on sale and religiously change both at 5000 mile intervals and my engines will last as long as anyone elses. All of the oil and filter hype is simply hype. IMO.

Any filter will work, i know a guy who has 425k on his 96 tacoma and he used dino oil and on sale filters too. I went with Toyota filters simply because they aren't crap and @ 3.99 vs 12.99 M1. Toyota filters are just cheaper and good quality.

And these same people who SWEAR by OEM filters and explain how GREAT they are only keep their vehicles 150k miles....I've never had a problem with any of my vehicles that had well over 300k miles when I sold them.

Theoretically any oil and filter will work very well as long as you change them enough. The problem with dino oil is that the molecules will break down over time and the wear protection begins to take a nose dive. This won't happen if you change your oil regularly. Synthetic oil does not break down over time so thus it can go many more miles, but in order to do so it needs a good quality filter with a high capacity and small particle filtration capability. I prefer the best in protection without having to crawl under my vehicle to so often.

Synthetic oil DOES break down...just takes longer. But oil also get's contaminated from the process of internal combustion at the same rate no matter if it's synthetic or not.

Also extending oil change intervals to beyond the 5k oil change interval can void your warranty.

And changing the oil on the 4runner is EASY...Takes less then 15 minutes..and most of that time is just waiting for the oil the drain from the pan.

Lastly....I've yet to see proof from ANY saying that Filter A destroyed my engine. I don't know of anyone who's ever heard that a filter destroyed their engine...

FRAM is also the brand with optional gaskets--FRAM quality. I always check before I pay for the filter when I used their filter in my other non-Toyota's, but there are some who don't check for this "optional feature" even prior to filter installation. I can go on for days on why they shouldn't be near a car, but that's for another thread.

Just because we don't hear about failures doesn't prove it's a good filter nor am I implying that Toyota OEM filter is superior and the best money can buy. But looking at the construction of the filter, I would hedge my bets the Toyota filter is at the very least marginally better than a FRAM. I agree this is not scientific, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way about FRAM. It's just like school, not failing is anything but an F, and a C is all that's needed to move onto the next course. So calling FRAM junk might be overboard, but decent is enough credit.

As I said earlier...I too use OEM filters...mainly because the dealer will sell me a case for $3...I use to buy Wix that way....until the local parts store got bought out by another parts store and no longer gave me the same deal.
