:bolt:the front end of the rock lobby is scary to look at..looks all mean and aggressive. if i saw that in my rear view i'd probably pull over to let you pass...
Nice rig! You will love the double low. I let my `86 runner idle on to the trailer. How hard was the light retro? I have just started to look into those.
Thanks! I can't wait to get it installed. I did a new clutch about 10K ago and its pretty much gone. Not roasting it to get up obstacles will be a welcome change!
I have been running the stock split 3 spoke wheels since I've had this truck. I like the design and i think they look pretty good painted a different color.
The main drawback to them is that they are only 7 inches wide. Running 315(12.5 inch wide) tires on them isn't exact ideal so I've been looking around for something a little wider with less offset. Problem is i feel like most wheels that are out now are just way too flashy to me.
I've always liked the Volk TE37's but at $750/wheel, they are a little out of my price range.
Enter the Konig Countersteer Offroad
These are basically a replica of the TE37's but $775/set, they are much more affordable! I called up Dustin at FN Wheels and got a set on the way.
I need to get some better pictures but here is a phone pic of them mounted.
I need to bust out the DSLR and get some better photos of it now
A little bling goes a long way on the Rock Lobster!!! That looks bad ass, Dylan. :clap2: The bronze works great w/the Sunfire Red and it makes the 35's pop out at you even more.
Did you get a matching spare, and did you ditch the spacers??? Just curious how the 4.5" BS is working w/315's.
Congrats on going to dual cases as well. The Lobster is turning into a seriously mean machine.
Those look good and I've been wondering what a bronze wheel looked like on the SR. Your truck has quite a few colors going on now. When's the hood getting done?
BFAD, he has 1.25 Spidertrax spacers, so no issue with the 4.5 bs.

Thanks Nick! I'm glad i went with the bronze. I did get a matching spare too.
I'm still running the Spidertrax spacers so they do stick out a decent amount especially since i have no flares. I don't think i would be able to run the 315's with just the 4.5 BS. I am going to pull one of the front spacers off and see how close it is though.

Yeah i feel like its getting pretty busy with the colors. I think i need to bring it back down a bit. I think the blue skids are gonna get painted either black or the hammer gray to match the bumpers. I need to get off my butt and get an 02 grille. Once i get one, i'm gonna paint that and the hood at the same time.
I'm kinda copying you in case you couldn't tell :biggrin2:
Are you going to have to move the fuel tank for the dual cases? I took some quick measurements back in the day and it looked really close, but I also have the multi-mode t-case and my measurements were mainly out of curiosity. You will love the dual cases (especially with 4.7 gears), it will blow your mind, just don't get bound up! Kaboom!!!

Eh it doesn't look bad and sets you apart from the masses. I'm trying to do something different with my Budbuilt, but I may just get lazy and repaint it all black as it's already scratched up. I have to say my 02 grille is still my favorite mod I've done. It just looks so natural on our SR's and really flows better than the other style grilles.
I appreciate the comment, but you're not copying, just going with what looks good...
The crawl box install when down today. Rock Toy Industries helped me with the install. It was nice having someone there that has installed these before.
The TacoBox setup is pretty sweet since it is a fully built unit that is ready to install in your rig. Since you are sandwiching another transfer case in between the transmission and your stock case, the front driveshaft has to be lengthened and the rear driveshaft needs to be shortened. The length difference is just the total length of the TacoBox which is 8.5 inches.
Since this Lobster is my winter daily driver, i couldn't have it undriveable while the driveshafts were being modified. I bought a spare junkyard driveshaft and pulled my front driveshaft and brought them to Rocky Mountain Driveline to have them modify the lengths. While they were doing that, i had them rebuild the double carden joint on the rear shaft and make sure both shafts were properly balanced.
Once that was done, we were ready to roll(or crawl? )
Going under the knife
Stock case came out pretty easy.
I wonder which one is the new one?
Yes i probably should have taken the time to wash my stock case but i am a lazy man. Its just going to get dirty again
You need to remove the stock coupler on the input for the tcase that you see in the above picture. RST's writeup recommend welding a nut to it and threading a bolt in to pull the coupler off the input shaft.
My cell phone camera had a moment of stupidity
The seal adapter and new seal gets installed on the transmission output shaft by tapping it in with a rubber mallet.
We did a couple dry fits of everything and noticed that one of he machined hole needed to be drilled all the way through so the stock case would bolt to the crawl box. Rear plate comes off with 6 bolts and you finishing drilling out the machined hole.
I'm assuming that should have been done at Marlin when it was built but it really was quite easy to do so NBD.
Bolting the crawl box up.
The adapters have a lot of different clocking options. I chose to leave it stock since i won't gain any clearance until i make a new crossmember and skid plate
Both cases bolted up. There is still about 4 inches of room between the rear case and the rear crossmember.
Panorama showing the TacoBox installed along with the modified driveshafts and the rest of the lobsters beat up belly.
Lets count the transfer cases in this picture. One. Two. Two! Two transfer cases!
Ah ah ah ah!
Here are how the shifters come into the cab. This will be finished tomorrow. The rear stick will come up into one of the cupholders.
That pretty much covers the install. But no crawlbox install would be complete with out a video of the truck driving with no one behind the wheel right?
So there you have it. I give you the worlds only (probably) IFS, Dual case, Open diffs 3rd gen 4Runner.
Yep an Elocker axle swap is in my near future. The rear diff started howling at me and i think i also have a bad wheel bearing. I decided i'm going to swap in a whole new axle so i don't have to deal with pressing in new bearings or modifying the housing to accept the elocker. Already have a front 4.30 diff in the garage so i just need to find a rear elocked axle. No one is the denver area has one for sale right now for some reason.
