theesotericone's Trails and BS Thread

Hey Matt,
How are things going with the truck? I saw it dumped in Bishop area, shut down the 395 for a few hours. Have you got the truck out there in the snow recently?

Hey Brian,

Things are going well. 35's are on and not rubbing anywhere except the frame at full lock. I might go to a 3.5 BS rim next to prevent that. The front end is pretty beat up from wheeling so it goes in the garage in the next few weeks for new tie rods and LCA bushings.

I had the truck out wheeling up Butterermilk Loop Saturday. There's a lot more snow up there now. We've got small storms coming in for the rest of the week so there should be another foot or so by next weekend.

Hey man nice rig and awesome trips you take
Thanks for sharing
Also man that bbq spot off the 395 in bishop top notch!!

Thanks man.

I've been lazy lazy about trip reports lately but it's post like yours that make taking the time to do them worth it.

Holy Smoke is the Bishop BBQ joint. Next time you're in town also check out Burger Barn. It's on West Line St heading towards the Buttermilks. Hands down the best burger on the East Side.

I wonder how many people mistake Copper Top in Lone Pine for every other BBQ joint on or near the 395 :head scratch emoji:

HiHo Cheeseburger in Santa Monica, serving waygu beef double and triple pattys In-n-Out style, is the best new comer burger joint on the West Side :D

I was thinking that was the funky looking 2 story place that's in a semi residential area so I looked it up a low and behold what's in the driveway....

We always just ate at Amigo's (get the acapulco chicken tacos) on our way through Bishop. Sounds like there are some other things to try in the future!

How's the weather treating you? SoCal has been getting hammered by rain...

I'm pretty sure this stuff is why my truck was riding like shit on the highway. lol

Bent passenger side inner tie rod.

E1IHUH6.jpg

Busted C-clip on passenger side CV. Also the outer/outer clamp was broken.

o7z5Ts8.jpg

Busted C-clip driver side CV. Both outer/outer and inner/inner clamps busted.

lZokEHp.jpg

Hard to see but bent the forward portion of the drivers side LCA mount.

BQ2aYli.jpg

Bent lower d-bushing bolt for the rack.

jtfaNT2.jpg

Blew apart the d-bushing itself and probably bent the d-bushing mount clamp.

That's it for the damage. I'll try and find some c-clips that don't ****ing break and re-grease and re-clamp the CV's. I'll bend the bolt back straight. I have new rack bushing so those will go on. I'll beat the LCA mount back to straight. Then new inner and outer tie rods and new LCA bushings.

I ended up trying the bottle jack method for the LCA's after letting them sit in Liquid Wrench for a bit. Less then 15 minutes and a little heat later and both sides where done. Notice the factory bottle jack modified to work with an impact gun. I can't thank rkntoy enough for that idea.

I'll finish up tomorrow and get an alignment this week. Then back to wheeling hard so I can do it all over again in 6 months. lol

Did this happen with skids in place? Is the rack housing still straight?

All the rest of the stuff seems 'normal' for hard wheeling, though annoying to fix.

Yep. My skids are actually in remarkable shape for what I've put them through. Big tip of the hat to Roy at Savage for a tough as nails product.

The rack itself is perfectly fine. The d-clamp and bushing gives before the rack body luckily.
Most guys I wheel with have the same issues with the passenger side rack mount. I know AssBurns and rkntoy have both busted or bent theirs as well.

When your bound up hard in rocks and need to turn the force of that tire can do one of a few things. It can break the outer tie rod, it can bend or break the inner tie rod or it can deform that bushing. The bushing is the obvious weak link but the mount and bolts also can deform. We're trying really hard to get eimkeith to come up with a weld on solution to help prevent it.

I am welding a reinforcement inside my d-clamp (I can send you a piece) then going to do the AssBurns mod. After that I am going to extend my skid a little so I can't tag the lower d-clamp stud anymore.

Talk about the perfect rig for everything off the 395. What a dream! Enjoy

Thanks man. Honestly, it's overkill for 99% of the trails on the East Side. I have to go out of my way to get into hard stuff. I have found plenty not in any guidebook though.

My studs never taken a rock hit. It's all from leverage and torque. When you see "send me one" do you mean the whole re-enforced d-mount? If so ship it and let me know what I owe you. We all know I can't weld for shit. lol

oh it's on the list. gotta finish this bumper first, though. :)

That things not done yet? Whenever you come up with a solution for the rack issue I'll take a prototype. Or you can do what you did last time and ship out the prototype then ship the finished product two hours later.

BTW, the fit on the lower link mount reinforcements was absolutely perfect. I can't wait to try and bend them. My rigs getting aligned tomorrow so this weekend will be there first real test. lol

Hows it going man?
Imma be heading up to your area this weekend going to check out the buttermilk loop and check out that burgee place you recommended
Do you happen to know how the trail is looking or the area in general?
Thanks man

Everything over 7000' still has a lot of snow down. We're supposed to get another 1-2 feet tonight above 7000'. I was up Buttermilk Loop about 2 weeks ago and I turned around just shy of the Horton Creek trail head. My tracks where the only ones for the last 1/2 mile of it. I'd plan on staying to the east of 395 and just playing on the FS roads. It's been a big snow year. lol

Battery box question.

Hey Matt!

Hope all is well man.

Hey, what battery box did you go with? I thought that I remember you saying you got an Odyssey battery, but I was wondering what battery you got, and what box you went with, and how you ended up mounting it? That flimsy POS battery tray is pissing me off and my Bosch 24F doesn't really fit there anyway. I was considering upping my battery game.

It seems like most the boxes I see available are made either for Optima, (no thanks) or Odyssey. The Odyssey say that they are made exclusively for 34/78 series batteries from Odyssey. *"These are for an Odyssey PC1500DT (34/78 series) battery, the most popular size."*

I figured I'd start by asking you because I remember you mentioning that you went that route.
