the top will never come off while i own it. frankly, i think they look terrible without the top, anyway, so the removable top isn't a plus. i STILL prefer it to the later generations. i like the 2-doors, rather than 4. i like the sliding rear windows. i don't need cup holders, cars didn't have them anyway back when i first started driving.

Did you mean 22R? I've never heard of a 4Runner with a 20R, I think they went out in 1980. The 22R was supposed to still be an option in '95, though I don't know how many they were actually selling at that point.

Im afraid that even the 84 Runner had a 22r then in 85 22re. 20R only available in 1st gen pickups.

even though i don't like the appearance of the 1st gen without the top, i do like its look with the top on, and believe it is far more appealing than any of the later generations. i do like the angular lines, the clean sides, and the lines of the top (as long as its ON). my cj5 looks much better without its top on - period. it's all about the proportions of the two in terms of topless appearance.
i haven't looked at later gen specs, but i assume (perhaps incorrectly) that the first gen weighs less than later models.
i also like the appearance of the canvas tops on the 1st gens.
all in all, the 1st gen serves me well as a high-clearance, moderately capable wagon in relatively stock form.

1. Lack of rust
2. Lack of rust
3. Looks like a 3rd gen
4. Comfy rear suspension
5. same front suspension as later 1st gens
6. No solid axle = no death wobble
7. Death wobble = Jeep reference
8. Jeep = evil and inferior
9. 1st gen must therefore = evil and inferior
10. Lack of rust
11. luxurious hidden cupholders
12. partially removable top (sunroof)
13. Lack of rust
14. 1st gen chassis
15. Harder to steal because no removable top
16. Cheaper than most/all 1st gens in comparable condition.
17. Toyota
18. Has the same drive train
19. Lack of rust
20. Goes the same places as a 1st gen.
21. Allows the option of freezing balls off or not. (lack of removable top)
22. Has just as many miles as a first gen.
23. Lack of rust.
24. Very little aftermarket support = more exclusive.

I think 1st gens are cool... but they look like old trucks, because they are. no doubt the second and third gens are old too, but they don't look like it.
Realistically though... if I hadn't bought my 4Runner, I would have bought the Heep right next to it for less money.

yeah but you never know. I mean I'm sure a few of you are taking a crap right now while reading this... and that can provoke anger. haha.
But seriously though. It was either buy this one for $1500 with a blown engine and a spare engine to be rebuilt, or buy the slightly newer Grand Cherokee 5.2 with crappy paint that ran well for $1k. I like to think I made the right choice.
