Stuff like this I would not get at autozone. Cooling is a vital part of the engine. Do not go the autozone route. Yeah thermostat is a basic element but getting this at the dealer will not break the bank. Plus seems pretty cheap to me still even going oem.
Oem toyota thermostat assembly with thermostats is $35.

Ok, I found one of autopartswarehouse.com for $26. Still pretty high for a thermostat. Oh well.

Got the part number from autopartswarehouse.com and put it into Amazon. They have it for $16.17. Now I'm good! Item on order.

Some have had issues with non-oem thermostats not being able to burp the system correctly which caused a huge amount of overheating issues which ended up costing them a lot more. You may want to spring the extra for an oem.

Wow, if spending $26 on your rig hurts your wallet than I suggest you sell the 4runner and buy a used jeep wrangler. You can buy 99% of jeep parts at autozone for CHEAP! That should make you really happy.

I have found that Toyota Parts - Wholesale Toyota Parts direct from Village Toyota | Village Toyota Parts is a great website to use for parts reference, their information is similar to what a parts counter guy is going to pull up. Also their prices aren't too bad either.

I agree with you about Autozone..but there's a world of difference between Autozone and a GOOD parts store. We have two local chains here in NH. Both carry good quality auto parts and the staff is very knowledgeable. I buy ALL my parts from them. While a dealer thermostat is fine...I can get AS GOOD QUALITY OR BETTER QUALITY parts from the local chain..and usually at half the dealer price. Toyota does NOT make thermostats. They are made for them by one of the many manufacturers. In fact I'll bet Toyota uses 2-3 vendors for it.

Toyota typically uses Denso for most of everything that goes on our vehicles.

Sorry to bump an old thread but how difficult is it to replace the thermostat? I'm having my coolant flushed at the dealer as part of my 90k service and want to also have them replace the thermostat so I don't have to worry about it, but I don't want to be ripped off. It is a pretty simple job?
