Thieves....

Update - 2/21/11

Just an update, I got a call from Tulsa police today, apparently they caught the guy stealing cats, or at least one of the guys that stole mine, got him locked up. I asked how many they believe he's stolen, she said at least 100. 100 catalytic converters stolen by this one guy....! That's incredible......! Anyway, I suggested they go after the places buying them....she said they are and to "stay tuned".....

Now I have to find my receipt and fax it into tpd....

Thanks,

-Ian

AWESOME!

It's always good to hear about these guys getting caught! I think the last thread on this subject also ended with the crook getting caught.

Has anyone installed one of these? How easy was the install and does it look like it would be hard to take off?

Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Lock

I have a chance to buy one, brand new in box for $100. Should I?

I did a quick google search. There are a few youtube videos on how to install it. It seems like a pretty messy setup. But, if it keeps the thieves away...

I'm like you. I'd like to know if it actually works. I remember when The Club came out. So many infomericals and testimonials about it. So far I haven't found any of that. Maybe they should make a Cat Club? :p

I was thinking of getting a chain and wrapping our cat and bolt it to the frame but I think this cable is a better way to go. I think I can arrange my own cable for cheaper. $100 aint bad but at $150 it's getting closer to the cost of a replacement cat after the deed is done.

Also, I'm wondering how much extra noise would be transmitted to the cab.

From what I understand, the cost or replacing a cat can start around $500. And the manufacturer's dealership would be considerably more.

I liked the idea of welding a chain along the exhaust pipe, or welding rebar to it. It sounds like you don't need to make it foolproof, just make it a little bit harder for them to remove quickly and they won't take it.

Damn theives. I hope they've heard of karma, because it can be a b*tch... So sorry man... I've gotten mine hacked off once. It was the middle of the night and apparently (i was asleep) these theives came and hacked off the cat converter... Oh well. And then about 6 months after that, a different set of theives I presume came and took the wheels and tires off my car and left it sitting there on four bricks. I just walked outside and there it was. My poor Jeep. (I owned a Jeep back in the day)

How about using two pieces of rebar and clamping them along the pipe and cat with 4 exhaust clamps?

Grats on them catching the bas****. What i did on my last car was get an alarm with a perimeter sensor. when someone is within 1 inch of your car (they dont even have to touch it) for more than like 3 seconds the alarm gives a warning. The only bad thing is that with a truck aparently if u have any wheel clearance they can reach up there and clip ur alarm wires. Ofcourse there are backup measures for that too. Just depends on how much trouble u think its worth.

Well, that might work too, but welding it means they HAVE to cut through it if they want the CAT.

Great idea... those little battery powered sawzalls wont be able to get thru rebar quick enough (or at all?) for it to be worth their while, otherwise they would risk getting caught.

Update with link to the news story and pic of the perp

Here is a link to the story on the news along with a picture of the guy they caught. The description matches what the witnesses gave, he even still has the "multi-colored" hair my witnesses talked about. I kinda feel sorry for the guy, I looked him up online, looks like his wife recently died back in September (he stole my cat in October) and I'm not sure if its his or not, but she has/had a 5 year old little boy.....so, it comes back around, wondering if he was stealing to put food on the table....? This is the heated discussions my brother and I have....

From the comments, it seems clear that some locals have identified the crooked scrap yard fomenting this BS. I hope the DA turns Sawzall guy and goes after the yard owners for real jail time. It's the only way to stop this.

I don't feel sorry for the scum. Stealing to put food on the table? Ridiculous. How about he get a job and make an honest living? He was probably fired for stealing from his employer.

good outcome to this story. Makes me worried about my new truck dammit! I don't feel bad for the guy at all, life choices. People have a lot of problems in life, you dont have to steal to put food on the table.
